The best multi-sport announcer: Gary Thorne. I love the guy. He's especially awesome for hockey.

He was also a Mets announcer for awhile, but he made so many mistakes (mispronouncing names, screwing up play calling) in addition to criticizing the Mets organization that he was promptly fired. I kinda like him too, but Gary Thorne + Fran Healy = Turn on the radio time

Sometimes turning on the radio is the only thing to do to escape the tv play-by-play announcers. I've watched many a game on TV with the mute on while listening to the radio play-by-play which is typically a lot better IMO.

How can you guys not list Billy Packer? Talk about a guy who never admits he is wrong. During the NCAA Final Four:

Billy: That was a good no-call. The ball was clearly off the rim when he tipped it in.
Jim Nance (walking through the replay which clearly shows goaltending): Well, the replay shows the ball on the rim when it was touched. Clearly Offensive Goaltending. Billy, you going to change your mind on that call?
Billy: Nope, I stand by what I said. That was not goaltending.

^paraphrasing, of course.

lol, madden is pretty bad. you figure for a guy who spends so much time on a bus/motor home driving from monday night game to monday night game weekly, that he could brush up on skills a bit.

vitale: ITS THE DIAPER-DANDY!

The D-backs have had a color guy named Rod Allen. I don't know if he is back this year, but that guy is a huge idiot.

I'm with mpitts for the rest. Walton is such a dumbass.

I like the way Jon Miller calls a baseball game, too bad he's stuck with that moron Joe Morgan.

Joe Buck needs to be kept away from Tim McCarver. McCarver is possibly the worst announcer on TV, that is until you get to Fox Sports South and you are verbally assaulted by Tom Paciorek doing the Braves games. My God, why the hell do they have this dumbass on TV?? Horrible is a mild understatement when it comes ot this guy.

Peace

Lounatik

Edit: I agree wholeheartedly about Jon Miller; excellent mellifluous voice for television. He could probably do any announcing and make it sound good.

Joe Morgan is, without a doubt, the worst baseball announcer. As others have said, he's a know-it-all who refuses to own up to his mistakes. McCarver seems like a very knowledgeable sportscaster, but he comes across as a know-it-all dork. I remember watching him and Ralph Kiner broadcast Mets games in the late '80s (I don't remember the third member of the broadcast team). McCarver was his usual dorky self and Kiner seemed to be spaced out all the time. Kiner one time claimed that a pop fly hit a plane flying over Shea Stadium. McCarver stared at him like he was a total idiot. Classic.

Madden is Mr. Obvious, but I can tolerate him more than the Gumbel/Simms team. There's something about that teamup that I can't stand. I'm probably in the minority on that opinion.

Bill "Throw It Down, Big Man!" Walton is there for humor. I think they may call him an analyst, but he rarely adds anything of intrinsic value to the broadcast. He may say some totally off-the-wall things, but I normally find them humorous -- sometimes because they truly are funny, other times because what he says is totally idiotic and his broadcast partners call him on it and ask him to clarify. He normally can't back up his statement beyond, "Just because" or "You know it's true" (something along those lines).

Well.. Thorne did the WB games as well as the Fox Sports Net ones. The Mets fired him after the 2002 season. Dave O'Brien was his replacement and I think he's pretty good if unremarkable.

I dont really know about the worst announcer, but I would have to say some of the best guys out there are John Davidson and Sam Rosen, the TV announcers for the New York Rangers.

Jerry Remy is who I'm thinking of. That Wanker doesn't pronounce his R's which makes him sound like an illiterate Southie

I used to watch those guys too back in the day. Kiner was hilarious. "It's Father's Day, so to all you fathers out there, happy birthday!"

HA!!!! I loved Ralph and Tim when they did the Mets games on Ch.9!!

Here's a few more Kiner Kuotes:

"All of his saves have come in relief appearances"

"Darryl Strawberry has been voted to the Hall of Fame five years in a row."

"I think one of the most difficult things for anyone who's played baseball is to accept the fact that maybe the players today are playing just as well as ever."

"If Casey Stengel were alive today, he'd be spinning in his grave."

"You know what they say about Chicago. If you don't like the weather, wait fifteen minutes."

"All of the Mets road wins against the Dodgers this year occurred at Dodger Stadium."

Here's some more!!!! Kiner Kuotes!

i like jon miller, gary thorne, & joe buck. morgan bleh...he's an idiot.

i dont like the scrubs espn hires for baseball...i.e. mike macfarlane who has no business being on television...at least morgan was probably the best 2b ever.

also jeff brantley with that stupid 1983 haircut and lame remarks.

Rob dibble says some idiotic things and doesn't really deserve to be on TV either, but he is entertaining sometimes.

Harold reynolds I like usually.

I can't stand paul mcguire on NFL broadcasts.

barry melrose annoys me too.
