Has anyone here ever heard of a Jack Rose? It seems odd to include that on the list over more established drinks like Alexanders or a basic Sour (whiskey sour being preferred).

Never heard of it and it sounds disgusting based on the OP. A Sour would make WAY more sense. Very odd.

The book was written in the 40's, so maybe they were more prevalent then.

Don't drink Alcohol, cause my taste buds never matured enough to like it, but my Uncle has at least 2 Manhattan's a day. He is 88, and never really drank till he got older, so I say he deserves them. Although he never got married, so I bet his low stress levels are why he has managed that many years.

A proper gimlet has lime juice, which yes has sugar, but it's not like adding simple syrup or something pure sugar.

Rose's Lime juice has added sugar.

Yes it does, as I said there is sugar, but it is much less than most other drinks, 4 or 5 parts vodka to 1 part rose's lime and not all of that part is sugar.

The Jack Rose is a staple of modern cocktail culture due to its historic background. Even just, say, 5 years ago, Laird's was seldom found just sitting on a shelf in a liquor store and now it's back to being everywhere again.

One of my hobbies has been following the "speakeasy"/cocktail industry the last few years (bars like PDT, Milk & Honey, Death & Co, Bourbon & Branch, The Velvet Hour, etc)...it's certainly held true to the hipsters that visit those kinds of bars and developed too much elitism but you can still have a good time meeting passionate bartenders and trying out new drinks and even just new liquors. One of the best things about the emergence of this industry is the all of the new liquors/bitters you can find.

tl dr; I like to drink fancy drinks. I also have stocked quite the bar over the years.

Don't forget to muddle your cherry in your old fashion! I have not made one those in about a decade though.

Problem with most drinks/names is they are named and made differently around the country/world since there is not really a "officail" way to make anything outside of some single liquor drinks.

That's because absinthe was banned for a long, long time in the states. Kind of hard to make a sazerac without it.

Applejack has almost completely been forgotten (other then a sudden resurgence of it recently) but was at one time the vodka of the cocktail scene. Remember that vodka was almost completely unheard of in the US before the 1950's and still very rare before 1962, after 1962 is became the one stop spirit for every american drink.

For those that don't know, applejack is a strong spirit a lot like vodka made by freezing hard apple cider and then taking off the ice that rises to the top. This leaves a very high alcoholic concentration. The freeze distillation process is called 'jacking' which is why it is applejack.

Not knowing what a Jack Rose is understandable. Not knowing what Applejack is tells me they just were not very good bartenders.

martini, old fashioned, and daiduiri.

We do old fashioneds a little different here in WI.

Add some 7-up, substitute Brandy for whisky, and a dash of cherry juice. About the only thing in common with a classic old fashioned is the bitters!

There isn't anything quite like having an Old Fashioned up at Lake Mead in northern Wisconsin.

Calvados is not really an apple jack, since it is distilled in a alembic pot still and not jacked.
