The linux client can be run in SMP mode with the appropriate switch:

./fah6 -smp -verbosity 9

If you get the latest fahcore_A2 Work units, you will get 5500 ppd on an OC'd Q6600 (1xSMP). These WUs are not available on Windows OS.;)

You can run GPU WU under wine in linux: link

It's painful to set up but it's certainly works well one it's running.

I wonder if that's more economical than my approach, four cheaper 9600GSO video cards in one box. Esp. since I don't seem to be able to run four video cards in one box without burning one up. (If they were all EVGA single-slot reference designs, I'm sure that they would have lived.)

I think it has something to do with the size of the L2 cache. C2D has lots more and many F@H WUs can use it effectively.

I just sold my last AMD PC. It was a heavily OC'd Opteron and the only thing I had to compare it to was the C2Qs I own. It wan't even close to 1/2 of what one of them could do.

-Sid

I think GLeeM is right that the L2 cache size is one of the biggest reasons for the difference.

Poor AMD. Their processors have never been very good at math. I hope their next processor family does better.

VirtualLarry, how did you put 4 cards in one PC?

Markfw900 & biodoc, thanks for the info. I glossed over the standard client and went right to the advanced ones, neglecting to see that the Linux client is SMP capable. Once I reload Vista onto a screwed up system, I'll fix them up. I think I'll pass on trying to run the GPU client under Linux (much as I would like to avoid Windows). Hopefully F@H will release a ready-made Linux GPU client soon.

Thanks for all the input.

I wish Linux would figure out that we need to interface to our hardware.... all of it

I wish Linux would figure out that software isn't much good unless it can be installed

I wish Linux would.............

/me sighs

I'll just get in MAs waiting line too.

I just bought a Radeon HD 4830 :), I wonder how well that will crunch F@H? (it's about 20% slower than a 4850 if that helps).
Btw I was going to get a 4850 but prices shot up (£20-£30) in recent weeks to a point where I can't justify spending :(, down to the £ falling in value I think :p, or maybe AMD price shifting for the new 4830??).

Actually in the Ath64 vs P4 days (03-06) AMD was much better ;).

BTW guys, it hasn't been over freezing for days here and I have to leave a window in the computer room open with a fan also blowing the hot air into the house, and its 75f in the house ! No furnace running...

When this race is over I may have to turn some comps off. These 12 8800 GT's are real heaters !

I wondered about what it was like in the houses with a gazillion computers.

I only had 2 running in a small bedroom and needed a small oscillating fan to blow the warmth out into the rest of the house.

His average was ~60k, then had some kind of "outage", but since he came back from that its been 80k,75k,75k the last three days, and headed for it again today.

I already got 6 8800 GT's and a quad just for this race, I am out of money. We do need some more hardware though.

I bought two 9800 GTX+ for the race so I'm done spending money.

Maybe I made a mistake in my spreadsheet. I'll wait for the next EOC update and redo the numbers.
