Was surprised to see Massa get back ahead of Bottas at the end of Q3.
I wonder if Maldonado will be allowed to start tomorrow. I think Grosjean was at least within the 107% - barely. Still, seeing how that car drives, I'm not sure, if it's actually safe to race - we'll see what the FIA and Charlie Whiting have to say about that.

It's impressive how much faster the Mercedes are than the rest of the field, I wonder for how long they can maintain that advantage. At the moment this is slightly reminiscent of the 2009 season.
 
Interesting session. Certainly looks like Red Bull is starting to get it figured out if they can get reliability down. Of course this was in the wet so the pure speed is still in question. Still have a strong feeling Merc is going to run away with. Riccardo was impressive in that last lap on intermediate tires. Definitely makes a statement in he was the right man for the drive. Can't wait for the race even though I have to DVR it.
 
So Formula1.com tells me that the race starts at 2:00am my time. But is this when the actual race starts or when the coverage with all the interviews etc. start?

eastern time zone? that's the race start. pre-show starts 1/2 hour to 1 hour before, depending on the station.

did anyone see the opening to sky's (uk) coverage? they ditched all the historic footage, but on the plus side the lame song is much shorter.

the first piece they played started with "i'm sorry. i'm sorry. i'm sorry"...."it was a procession. it was a procession. it was a procession, not a race. but do not despair..."

the first thing out of a broadcaster's mouth is an apology with a promise of blowing minds to come. pathetic :colbert:
 
So it turns out Seb did get Mark's car... hahaha.

I'm excited for the rest of the season. The Williams pace is real. 😎
 
BAH! Misfiring cylinder on Hamilton's. Wasted opportunity. Huge disappointment.

Vettel failure too, heard him freaking out over the radio several times.

Overall very good race. Great performances by Mag, Kvyat and Bottas.

great race! some sweet machines and some breakdowns, some fantastic driving and some errors. strong drives from veterans and especially the young blood. more power than grip is the right formula.

more of this, please!
 
Ricciardo DSQ for fuel flow exceeding 100kg/hr.

RB have appealed, as they think that the FIA's probe/sensor might be faulty.
 
Shame about Ricciardo DSQ.

Looks like Hamilton is now getting all the reliability gremlins. With this engine failure and the problems he's had in pre-season testing he has now gotten well over 100 laps less driving in this new car (or ~2 races distances) than Rosberg has.

And being 25 points down in the championship already, If Lewis is going to win this over his team mate he is now going to have to really work for it and consistently outscore Rosberg. And he will have to do so before we are near the end of the season, because if there is competition he would have to play the team game and play support driver to ensure Rosberg gets it if he is too far behind.

The good news is that even if Mercedes seem to be the next RedBull, at least both drivers should be pushing each other as opposed to simply having Vettle sweep the floor the whole season.
 
Wow, after Kobayashi took full responsibility and apologized profusely for crashing into Massa (you can tell he felt horrible about it), and then Massa calling for a race ban, the stewards determined from the data that it was his brakes that failed and he did nothing wrong.

the team had replaced a faulty fuel flow sensor, and the replacement was slightly less faulty. the fia had "recommended" red bull make changes that would give them less fuel than other cars, and are penalizing red bull for not following the "recommendation". the rules allow for any overage to be made up for within 3 laps to bring the car back within the fuel-flow rules, which red bull chose not to do all race.

it's been known for a while this situation would happen. even with tight quality control, there are variances in the standard-issue sensors, and the top teams plow through boat-loads of them to find the ones that allow for the very most performance. when a team flows too much fuel, they can just say "hey, not my fault. we are using the parts you gave us."
 
Looked the same to me. A little racing at first, the leader runs off, then a set piece parade affected only by pit stops or car problems.

With the addition of engines that that sound bad.

Something still doesn't seem right with the scenario. Isn't the entire fuel allowance for a Grand Prix 100 kg total? The winning time for the race was 1:32:58.710, with Ricciardo another 20-30 secs. adrift.

Even factoring in the formation laps (x2) and the safety car laps, would Ricciardo have been able to finish the race without running out of fuel? I say this because the stewards said the fuel flow rate was "consistently above" the allowable rate of 100 kg/hr.

I kind of like that the cars are quieter. We get more information that way, such as tire noise and crowd cheers. Which makes watching a racer a richer experience. Also, I like the richer, more varied nature of the sounds. The turbines whistling away and occasional valve dumping make for a dramatic sound track.

And in any development formula series, you will see that eventually the different capabilities of the cars will make the field be further apart - that's the point of the entire event. If you want close, driver focused racing (though setup skill still matters) look at some one-make series, like the Porsche Supercup, and potentially some of the Renault-based open wheel series.

Anyway, Bottas' and Hülkenberg's drives were anything but what you described.

Well, someone above noted the 3 lap rule to get below the limit again. Consistently probably meant that maximum flow exceeded 100kg/h averaged over several laps in which he was defending from an attack, but was obviously lower for most of the remaining time. But yeah, Most of the publications discussing the issue do not manage to be clear about what the rule exactly states and what compliance to this rule really entails.
 
Great result for Magnussen and Rosberg! I'm not sure about the DQ, sucks for Ricciardo. Was this announced before the podium celebrations or after? I didn't see the post race wrap up.
 
Why can't the FIA be realistic about regulations? Just regulate the allotment of fuel per event. That should be it. Why complicate it with flow sensors?
