This post exemplifies my issue with the word. Sometimes it's not clear what the motivation behind the user's comment is, be it merely habitual or truly denigrating like the above.
 
Why not just say "that sucks" or "that's stupid?" There are enough alternatives (and enough people that get offended by the use of the word) that it's not even worth using. It doesn't even come down to being politically correct or whatever, why not just grow up?

Or when I say "fuck you" I am implying that I would like to have sexual intercourse with you.

Or when I say "this is bullshit" I am implying that "this" has the qualities of bull feces.

Fine, get out a thesaurus and use other words. At any rate, my understanding is that "sucks" refers to oral sex, not necessarily oral sex between two men. Anyone know one way or the other?


And apparently "stupid" is derived from the latin stupidus (being amazed or confounded). I don't think anyone these days associates the word stupid with carrying a mental retardation diagnosis.

No - people use all of these terms (stupid, retarded, gay, sucks, etc) as generic terms to denote anything negative. Sometimes they actually correlate, like when someone makes a mental blunder and the response is 'thats stupid', but generally they're just used generically in a negative fashion.

To single one out as being offensive - but then saying the others aren't - (such as this thread is doing) is, well, stupid 🙂

I wouldn't go as far as "absurdly sensitive". People aren't holding marches to get people to cease this usage, or committing acts of violence against people saying it.

Anyway, we can infer that about 50%, sorry 99%(I forgot that the 50% with poor diction talk far more), of ATOT is full of poor diction.
