If i lived in Daytona, I would have bought a gun a long time ago. Thank the Lord I grew up in Cocoa Beach instead of Daytona Beach.....

Before the gun buffs get in here...

Seriously consider whether or not you really want to own a gun. The risks involved of accidentally shooting someone because of a misunderstanding or otherwise could affect you for the rest of your life. If you do decide to get one, make sure you lock it properly and make sure you know how to use it, again, properly. Don't be too quick to get the thing out, either.

Personally, I wouldn't bring a weapon into the house if any of the occupants weren't comfortable having it around.

Of course, it's up to you.

A good and logical choice but right now real estate is selling like snow-cones in a blizzard. I also
lose my tax cap if I sell and move, another $1100 a year I'd have to shell out..

Victim was a female, you're probably safer than you think.

I'd be more concerned about your wife's safety.

Train the occupants how to safely handle the weapon, and there is nothing to worry about.

Keep the weapon safe, but don't lock it up too safely where you can not access it at a moments notice.

She will get over it.

That usually only applies to idiots who don't actually know anything about guns. You know, the kind of idiot who goes out and buys a gun because it is cool or he feels unsafe but he doesn't have the background or experience to own a gun. Us so called "gun nuts" have been around guns most of our lives and safety is always first on our minds or we wouldn't be here. If you are around them your whole life and know how to handle them you are a bad guys worst nightmare as most of them do not. I learned a very important thing this afternoon out in the National Foresst. Contrary to what movies show, a competent shooter with an automatic weapon in his hands can turn a man's chest into a huge pile of goo at 30 yards......every time. I am sticking to being a "gun nut" because liberals are going to make sure it comes in handy one day.

I have no problem with guns or the people who own them. If you know how to use it and control yourself, and don't just grab it out of fear, then you're golden. If you know how to use a weapon, then damn right, you should probably have one. But someone who just picks one up after an incident is probably the last person who should own one.

Very true. And a little PSA to ANYONE even thinking about getting a gun for self defense needs to ask themselves one simple question. "Are you capable or killing someone without thinking about it if the need ever arises?" If you even have to think about the answer then you SHOULD NOT have a gun as it will likely only get you killed.

My girlfriend wouldn't even touch a gun the first time I showed her one. Once I managed to get her to the shooting range, she lost her irrational fears of guns. She keeps one at her house now.

I understand I will need to take time to learn how to properly use and store a firearm and there are 2 ranges locally that
I can use for practice. If I can learn how to build a computer, I can learn how to handle a shotgun as well..

I think its a little more hten that. You can probably learn how to handle a shotgun, but there are emotional/mental things that go along with it.

I can probably get my gf to know a shotgun/handgun inside and out, but in the end, when its time to shoot someone, she's going to hesitate and having a firearm just might get her into more trouble. Thats why her main defense is mace/stun gun.

If she does get a shot off, I don't know if she could recover from the fact that she killed anyone either.

Well, I guess I went off on a tangent and was thinking about protection out and about, CCW permit wise. For home defense, yea, dog for early warning and shotgun. I'm just saying that some people just can't handle a gun very well.

If someone broke into the house when I wasn't there though, the first thing she'd do is call the cops while loading the shells. I'd rather deal with her coping with killing a person psychologically then with something happening to her.

EDIT: I've made it habit to go to sleep with the bedroom door locked, so theres no wasted time closed and locking it.

Also take into account that the victim's picture looks like a mugshot, there's a large possibility that she was a prostitute.

If an escaped convict breaks into your home, rapes your wife and killed your children. And then he is about to rape you and you have a 12 gauge in your hand. He has a knife. The convict has nothing to lose and is serving 5 life sentences, so he is going to get as much sex as he wants before going back. You recognize him from news reports on TV.

Would you shoot him or just let him rape you?

What kind of freaking question was that? Hell, I would shot the guy with my .45 about 20 seconds after he broke into my home :)

Seriously, though... Make sure to get a reliable gun and LEARN how to use the it well before trying to defend yourself! If you screw up and/or the gun misfires and gets jammed, you just made things a LOT worse. Not only is the guy still alive, but now he's pissed because you tried to shoot him!
