If you insist on buying a gun DON"T JUST TAKE A SAFETY COURSE offered by the police.

JOIN A FIRING RANGE AND PRACTICE... PRACTICE... PRACTICE and if you don't have the time then DON'T BUY THE GUN!

Sorry for the yelling.

The risks involved of accidentally hitting someone because of a misunderstanding or otherwise could affect you for the rest of your life. If you do decide to get one, make sure you park it properly and make sure you know how to drive it, again, properly. Don't be too quick to get the thing out, either.

subsituted with something which is statistically more dangerous ;)

Well, I guess I went off on a tangent and was thinking about protection out and about, CCW permit wise. For home defense, yea, dog for early warning and shotgun. I'm just saying that some people just can't handle a gun very well.

If someone broke into the house when I wasn't there though, the first thing she'd do is call the cops while loading the shells. I'd rather deal with her coping with killing a person psychologically then with something happening to her.

EDIT: I've made it habit to go to sleep with the bedroom door locked, so theres no wasted time closed and locking it.

Assuming you don't have children to worry about, you should keep your home defense weapon loaded. With a CCW, you shouldn't even bother carrying if there's not a round in the chamber at all times.

yeah the worst thing is buying a gun for protection and then not being familiar enough with it to know how to load/disengage the safety mechanism/fire while you are fumbling around in the dark at night with your heart pounded as someone is trying to break down your door!
