QFT, but FWIW Ive had sprint, tmobile and nextel, in that order. Sprint was the best, but that was years ago. Tmobile was crap, and Nextel is alright, though I am afraid of catching cancer from my nextel.

verizon would have no competition if they would use GSM phones.

I don't know what the big deal is about GSM phones but I've never had any problems with CDMA. In fact my Verizon phone picks up inside buildings where most (GSM) carriers don't.

My grandparents had Cingular and would always get cut off when walking around their house. They now have Verizon and have never had a call dropped.

Well i like that i can just buy any old phone and pop in the sim card, or just pick up a sim in another country while traveling, but it does me no damn good if the service dosent work here at home...

I went from Cingular to Verizon and have been very happy with their service.

Edit:

Also since you're in FL this will be a good thing to keep in mind...

In last years hurricanes that hit me pretty good in Plantation FL, all cell phone service was down EXCEPT for Verizon, don't know if that was just chance or a sign of their quality.

Had it not been for my work provided Verizon phone at the time, I wouldn't have been able to communicate what so ever.

FWIW I had my personal Cingular phone with no service, my work Nextel with no service and my work Verizon PDA/Phone with service.

With Verizon they can transfer all of your contacts from the old phone to the new phone when you upgrade. We've had them do it a few times. You can also do it yourself if you have the usb hookup for both phones. I used BitPim to transfer all of the data from my old phone to my new one (including ringtones, pics, contacts, etc.). The sim card is only a big deal if you travel out of the country a lot.

I was with Verizon back before they acquired GTE Wireless... The towers they obtained in this area were the best for the time. I would think they have some of the best overall coverage...but I would still base my service on the price of the plan rather than overall quality as long as you get a signal 98% of the time.

Tmobile FTW.

Whenever I need a customer rep, they are there. I call up the 611 and get toa rep in less than 1 mins. the service has been flawless.

Well, unfortunately i do quite often. Lately ive been out 2-3 times a year. But all i need to do is keep my old GSM phone for those trips.

Sorry, worded it wrong. I mean to say the only thing I miss is the freedom that you have with GSM.

i vote for verizon. since so many people have them, especially here in NY, i barely use any of my minutes.....its all IN calling and the same goes for text messages.

i just wish their prices were a little more competitive.

I enjoyed having the freedom to change phones whenever I wanted. With Cingular, you could get any GSM phone you wanted (100's and 100's of phones), while with Verizon, your stuck with a handful of phones that they have chosen to put on their network (nowhere near the number of GSM phones out there). Although convenient, it doesn't only matter if you travel out of the country.

It might be just where you live. I live in Pennsylvania and my service with Cingular has been fine, but I do agree that their customer service blows.

Using 3 lines with Cingular for about 18 months now. Very happy with the service and never had a problem with customer service...then again I've only called once.

I really don't understand why people have to call customer service for their cell service so much...::shrug::

I made the switch to alltel from tmobile and my service has been sooooo much better since. I didnt think tmobile was that bad but it was a crappy signal from time to time. Switched to alltel and been clear and great

Read this earlier, now my Cingular phone is dead. "Certain customers in your area are experiencing difficulty making or receiving calls." That's kind of the whole fvcking point of a phone now isn't it.

My buddy said Cingular was down in Austin parts of today too. I've already ditched Cingular and Sprint due to quality issues and now have T-mobile. Happy so far

The only companies I'd want to deal with in Florida (I live in Brooksville, FL, maybe 80 miles north of Sarasota) other than Cingular/ATTWS are Alltel and Verizon. I know a couple of people in Brooksville, Tampa, and New Tampa with Sprint and T-Mobile and they just can't wait for their contracts to end because of the horrible reception, I think one actually bit the ETF to get away from T-Mo's horrible coverage. Before we jumped ship to AT&T Wireless we had Alltel and we loved the service, AT&T had a kickass deal at the time and GSM > CDMA. Everyone I know that isn't with Cingular is on Alltel or Verizon, they have great coverage and AFAIK Alltel's rates aren't too bad; don't know about Verizon's rates. Nextel has good coverage here too but the feds plan on shutting down their iDEN network to use it for themselves I think in 2008, so I wouldn't choose Nextel.
