An average consumer is going to judge their purchase only on few basic criteria such as color, screen size, and weight but mostly on the PRICE.
They're not going to understand why a 17" laptop from apple justifies the premium that it does. I'm not too sure either.
Hopefully, Apple can address this issue - but I doubt it.

I'm not sure the specs of the sub $1,000 laptop are, but I'm sure the CPU is much better than the PowerPC G4 processor in the Powerbook G4.

Not really. The build quality of say a Mac Book Pro is unmatched in the PC world. The closest you'll find is the Adamo from Dell and it's even more expensive.

Some of it is about cool factor, sure. But some of us like nice things, do why carry around janky plastic Dell notebook if you can afford something better?

I beg to differ. I've handled MacBook Pro's and their build quality is good, but not better than all PCs.

Let's see...

ThinkPad has:

- Better pointing device (the nub just works better, always has).
- Infinitely better keyboard (longer travel, larger layout, easily the best in the business).
- Legendary durability.

MacBooks are fine if you're a college student, but there's a reason why essentially every business consultant uses a ThinkPad. It's because we know that the ThinkPad will be durable and dependable through constant use as a main computer and through being thrown around in airport security lines twice a week. Sorry, but the ThinkPad is a clearly superior machine from a durability and practicality standpoint.

I beg to differ.... I have both machines, a macbook pro and a thinkpad T60.

Thinkpad built like a tank, no issues.
Macbook Pro... on my third screen, I've actually had my Macbook Pro in for repair longer than I've actually used it. I've only owned it for about 3 months!

Overall I'm kinda disappointed by the entire experience, I'll wait to see what Snow Leopard is like before I decide whether or not to ditch OSX.
