I can't believe I just dropped $59.99 on MW2 for the PC last week and I was dying to play it all last week.

This game is in some seriously need of some TLC. I can't believe the utter crap that I just installed on my PC. Now, I know what you are thinking and yes, I did a fresh format and reinstalled Win7 x64 with all the LATEST drivers so I know this isn't the PC.

From the time I launch the game it is a stuttering mess and even the first level SP mission is broken as I run out of the school and have no idea where to go as my compass and meter gauge that tells me how far away I am are not even showing up. Not to mention the constant freezes and lock ups I have been experiencing. And I know its not just me with the all the web pages stating the same issues.

IW needs to come out with a patch and FAST!

This is exactly why I stopped playing PC games. Lack of quality control is still a big issue.

It boggles my mind that you even bought the game to begin with knowing about the auto-matching multi-player with no admins, making the game a hackfest.

I did an integrity check for the local files.....

It says, "1 files failed to validate and will be reacquired." Then the STEAM message says MW2 is now up to date, and then when I do it again and again it just says the same thing.

seems like there is 4870 specific issues. the game is gorgeous and running great on my measly 8800GT at 1680x1050 2xAA.

That could be the problem.. Sorry i cant help the OP.

It could still be a 4870 problem.. All of the people i've seen had 512MB 4870's.

Also, it seems from that link that XP doesnt like MW2

I completely disagree its my hardware. I noticed most if not all the people with this issue were running Win7 x64 like me.

Win7 is still "beta" (even though it's released). It typically takes about 6 months for most of the bugs to get worked out. ;)

Win7 is not beta anything, its Windows 6.1. Serioulsy, give yourself the verbose boot information and next time it boots pay close attention. It says Windows 6.1.
Its Vista with fixes, and since Vista was a HUGE mess, its really just a fix of a mess. But its not beta, its actually quite old in the world of computers.

Back on topic: I never buy a console port until its had at least one major patch. Usually by that time its much cheaper as well. If it never gets a bug patch, I pass on it.
Too many good games deserve my money.

I think there was similar talk in the Borderlands forums about the 4870 too. Might be something wrong with the chipset?

Possible culprits:

CPU overclock
sound card
video card

Underclock your CPU to stock speeds and use your onboard sound.

Epic Games made the same mistake with Unreal Tournament 3 -- they released an unfinished buggy alpha or beta as a retail release and killed their franchise. You make it sound like the COD4 MW2 producers succumbed to a similar type of consolitus.

I've learned my lesson--I will never again buy a game, regardless of how much it is hyped--in the first two weeks of the game's release.

This is unbearable. So I turned up my 4870 fan and it seems to have helped a little bit. I am beginning to wonder tho......these pauses have me baffled.

I tried playing the first SP mission again and same thing once I get to the back building they tell us they need help in the front of the school but there is no one there and the guys are shooting at an empty building. Then I get all the text from earlier in the level at one time......like the entire dialogue from the last scene shows up.....just dumb.

not a single issue. steam sucks ass and will give unrelated problems from time to time, but retail copy of MW2 has been wonderfully stable and bug-free.

Everything I'm reading online is saying it's the 4870. It definitely seems like it's smoke/particle effects causing the issue.
