Thank you Codemasters...

Microsoft may refuse to pull the plug, but GFWL's incompetence and lethargy may soon become its own undoing, as more and more game makers abandon it. Over the last few years it's been dropped like a bad habit by 2K, Bethesda, Eidos/Square Enix, THQ, Rockstar, and SEGA. EA had a one-time fling when it released Bulletstorm last year, but with the launch of Origin it's safe to say that won't happen again. The latest to join the exodus is Codemasters, which has dropped GFWL from DiRT: Showdown. "I think a lot of people have shouted out for it, asking why we're not using Steamworks, so we've transitioned across now," said DiRT Associate Producer Ian Smith when asked about the switch. "It's the logical choice for us, the popular logical choice for everybody concerned." He added that this will likely be a long-term switch for Codemasters, and cited customer concerns about usability with GFWL.

That means that as of now, the only notable publishers (other than Microsoft itself) still using GFWL are Warner Bros., Capcom, and Namco Bandai, and the only announced games of note are Street Fighter X Tekken, Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, Resident Evil 6, Lost Planet 3, and Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition. That's still too many, but we're on the right track: if Namco Bandai gets the message and drops it as well, as it's hinted that it might, GFWL's support will have dwindled to near oblivion, and it'll only be a matter of time before Capcom and Warner give in as well.

But wait, you say! Microsoft is integrating Live into Windows 8! True, but that's not Games for Windows Live, it's
Xbox Live. That's the Live Microsoft cares about, and that's the Live that will live on. Even if GFWL does continue to plug along somehow, what's a multiplayer service with no games?

F1 2012 is also going to be a steamworks game.

It probably won't happen, but maybe companies will follow up and rip the GFWL out of their older games like Fallout 3.

God i hate gfwl,it won't be missed,i tried installing gta4 not to long ago and i failed miserably cause gfwl kept popping up update errors and kept nagging despite having them all installed, ended up tossing the game in the trash vowing to never purchase another gfwl title.

Exact same problem here. Thinking of just rebuying it on Steam.

It still uses GFWL on Steam. I remember taking more than an hour trying to get the game to work with GFWL on my Steam copy of GTA4.

Ya, I know it does. Just was hoping that whatever the hell is wrong with GFWL would be solved that way. I suppose that's a no go now then. crap

Is that the one where I have to log-in to save my game? Single handedly destroyed my experience with Batman series from Capcom. Any game that requires me to log in to begin to play pisses me off, but GFWL takes the cake.

I got Dirt 3 for free. And I almost didn't play it at all because of GFWL. I hate that service so much. Same went for BioShock 1/2. Really hope BioShock 3 does not use GFWL.

While I never had an issue with it, it really is awful from a DRM standpoint. I wouldn't mind it as an optional program that some could use if they want to utilize their Live account and such, but the mandatory DRM side of it is terrible.

It seems most of the hatred for GFWL comes from people who previously didn't have an XBL account... or had issues when reformatting and because they didn't back up the GFWL config file, all their saves were lost because saves were encrypted (achievements, yo).

I never had a problem with GFWL, and I'm pretty indifferent to it. Logs in automatically for me, and I manage my saves with Gamesave manager (all PC gamers should have this program installed and be backing up saves to dropbox).

Has nothing to do with Savegames. Everything to do with Games just ceasing to even run.

That sounds like a lot of effort just to play a video game. I play games as a source of entertainment, so I don't want it to be more work. That is my issue with DRM, it makes playing games frustrating, when I have enough responsibilities and frustrations in my life without my entertainment adding to it.

Well, that's certainly weird. Never had an issue like that on multiple system configurations.

What effort? Installing a program that automatically backs up your gamesaves to drop box is a lot of effort? Sure as hell beats the old way of doing it. The old way usually involved hunting down a specific directory and HOPE you saved the correct files. OR You'd forget that you had a certain save game when it was time to reformat, and you lost progress forever.

For me, it's great and easy. For you, I guess it's extra work. To be fair, a feature like this should be built into the OS, but that's unlikely to happen.

LOL the best post of the whole entire thread and the one that is 100% true.

Bulletstorm which i thought was a decent game was also a gfwl title,i found it super strange if i wait even 3 days after a fresh install of my os,the game simply refused to update and play, but if i install it and run it the hour the fresh install of my os got done, the game would run just fine.

No conflicts no programs or updates that i could find or locate could explain such strange behavior and it still baffles me as no other title in history of pc gaming has been as fussy as Bulletstorm till GTA4 which simply didn't do nothing period besides become a paperweight.
