I've never had Thai food before, so my wife and I decided to try the place downtown. I like food with a little kick to it so I ordered one of their dishes marked "hot". It was a green pepper curry chicken, and the guy asked how hot I wanted it. I was a bit confused as I didn't know it was an option and just gave him a blank look. :) He asked me on a scale of one to five, how hot I wanted it. I said four, thinking I'd be safe.

Big mistake.

I have NEVER eaten something that hot before. After taking a big bite, my wife starting laughing out loud as my face turned bright red, my eyes watered like crazy, and my nose started running. Fortunately I had enough rice, water and beer (Singha, a Thai beer which was actually pretty good) to get the rest of the meal down without crying.

If you like spicy food, give Thai a try. But you may want to ease into it a bit. :Q :D

Mmm...I love thai food. Indian is better though, more exotic in my opinion. Thai is a good replacement for Chinese. :)

I loooove hot food. Can't get enough.

I always ask for 8-star even though it confuses them, they usually only offer the option of 4- or 5-star. Still, it comes back 3-star.

It's better than bland cantonese.

If it won't burn tomorrow, it isn't hot enough today. =8^o

Sounds exciting:). I thought I was doing ok with Taco Bell's "Fire" sauce...j/k;)

BoberFett - Are you american ?
Not to brag or anything but usually for us asian the rating doesn't do justice.
usually the restaurant already tone down the rating to accomodate American taste.
Even the maximum rating (whatever it is) is pretty mild for me.
Did you try Tom Yum with extra hot ? I guarantee you that wil make you cry (in a good way).
It's very good especially if you live in cold areas, warm the stomach.

Heh, my dad loves hot sauce. In fact he makes his own, composed of concentrated habanero peppers.

Its astounding. If it even touches my skin, it turns bright red and burns for the rest of the night.

LOL! You're gonna be sorry when it come out the other end too :disgust:

I'm asian, but I have to order Whiteman medium-hot at Thai restaurants.

Whiteman medium-hot is about 0.5 out of 5 on the Thai spicy scale.

I'd have to agree with the other asians. Hot for a westerner is bland/mild for most asians.

Mmmmmmmm I suddenly feel like having lamb vindaloo. Every curry I ever had in restaurants paled in comparison with the one that my Malaysian ex-wife cooks. That Malaysian chili powder is murder. We had some Tamil and Pakistanese friends beg for mercy, yet while it was superhot, the curry was not sour or bitter, something that would be impossible to achieve if you use that excremental juice called Tabasco.:)

Yeah, I'm American, and from the midwest. Home of the most bland food on earth. Meat and potatoes - yeeeeccch. :disgust:

I love spicy food, I guess it's hard to compare what I had tonight to anything else, since this is the hottest thing I've had. But I know I can handle hot better than most people I know from this area. I imagine someday I'll have to go globetrotting just to find some good eats.

Mmmm, Thai food and Indian food! Sometimes I miss the big city. I used to buy this curry sauce imported from Hong Kong. I can't remember the name of it, but it came in a whiskey like bottle and had a recipe which included chicken, potatoes, and carrots(perhaps someone here from Hong Kong can recognize that description). That sauce was freakin' hot(it did burn all the way through), but oh so good. If you checkout a specialty foods section or store you might be able to find it.

what I like are the menus... At a couple of local Thai places, the menu has 'penis sauce' (peanut sauce) & 'fungus' (mushrooms). Have never figured out who did the translations for them, but we always have a good laugh to go with the good food.

I just had a flashback of the name of the curry sauce I mentioned earlier. I think it's Kim Kum Kee(hopefully I didn't say something foul! ).

No. You can say "Kum."
Thai food sucks. Once I ate at the thai place here in Ithaca. Expensive, and made me sick.
