Text messaging

I don't want your phone number so I can text message you... I want your phone number so I can talk to you.

Ugh. I am disliking this form of communication because it takes too long and doesn't convey things I want to say.

I don't mind it for somethings but I hate it for trying to do conversations.

It's good for certain things, but I suspect a lot of people use it when they should just be talking to the other person.

I love text-messaging. No longer do I have to slam my head off a wall while someone rambles on about some bullshit I don't care about. Message deleted.

Simple, short, and to the point.

Fuck phonecalls.

Don't hate it, just don't like it. Feels like using internet messaging things: send and hope they'll reply within 10 hours. This is like leaving a voice message everytime minus a lot of information.

This I disagree with. If it's "my girl," then I would enjoy hearing her voice. It's those little things.

Holy shit... 10 replies in like 3 minutes?

Edits: Yes, I have friends I text to. I don't mind it sometimes, but I really like conversation...(IM Conversation can work sometimes because of the extremely rapid pace that is actual talking speed... 120WPM etc)

Alone, you seem to not be interested in anyone's life except yours. I genuinely care about people and how they are. Also, no one I know goes on and on about things I do not care about often... Very seldom do they ever (And when they do I don't mind). Maybe you should get new friends?

texting is good in some situations

you can text someone in areas you are required to be silent
better for giving information such as time/location/address phone #s

works much better if you are in a loud area such as a bar as well

outside of those than I do prefer the phone

This is how I feel for the most part. Although I don't know about the bar things... I like text messaging for when I am at a social dance and not dancing. It's nice for certain things.

This. I have a friend who never answers his phone or checks his voice mail. He only sends me text messages in response to missed calls. So I'll get a few word long message, and then I have to reply, and then he replies, and then generally I reply, and then we're done. So four messages, each of which contains a very small amount of information and takes about 1 minute to compose and send. I told him to please at least try calling me before texting and if I'm not there, feel free to text me instead.

I'm okay with it in some situations. It's better than voice mail for leaving a message that someone can get later. But if you're having a conversation with someone and you're both good at not rambling on forever, it's faster and more convenient to just talk on the phone.

But text messaging is quicker and easier than talking to someone... What's the point of this thread again?

Hardly... You talk faster than you type on the keyboard and you text message much slower than you type on a keyboard...

How is that quicker and easier again?

I text message all my buddies and chicks I go out with. I hate talking on the phone. I'll only talk on the phone when driving or business.

I can type at about average conversation speed. How slow do you type?

I type around 120WPM. (That is 100% accuracy, of course)

And do a lot of conversations go faster than that? Or have a need to?

Seems like ample speed to have a good conversation flow to me.

I prefer to talk. Half the time I text someone they reply back with a response that makes me wonder if they even read my text to them, so then I have to reply back clarifying what I wanted, and by the time they finally reply back with a useful answer its been about 15 minutes of wasted time.

You expect us to believe you can text as fast as you can type, and then wait for the message to go out, and then wait for the other party to text back, and assuming they have the same godlike texting ability as you, and it be quicker than just talking?

My conversations can go faster than that, yes.

I prefer hearing the voice because then I can tell when someone is joking and when someone laughs and tone of voice, etc.. Seeing, "Haha" or "lol" is usually not satisfying.

Yes.. This happens to me a lot. It's not so bad with IM on the keyboard, but text messaging it is far worse.
