HOUSTON — A sheriff's deputy in uniform was shot and killed Friday night while filling up his patrol car at a suburban Houston gas station, according to authorities.

Deputy Darren Goforth, 47, was pumping gas into his vehicle when a man approached him from behind and fired multiple shots, Harris County Sheriff's Office spokesman Ryan Sullivan told The Associated Press. Once the deputy fell to the ground, the suspect fired more shots.

Goforth was a 10-year veteran of the force.

Police described the suspect as a male with a dark complexion, about 5-foot-10 to 6-feet tall, wearing a white T-shirt and red shorts and driving a red or maroon pickup-style truck with an extended cab. They said an intensive search for the suspect remained ongoing Saturday morning.

Sheriff's office spokesman Deputy Thomas Gilliland said Goforth had traveled to the Chevron station where the shooting happened, after earlier responding to a routine car accident.

"He was pumping into his vehicle . and the male suspect came up behind him and shot the deputy multiple times," Gilliland told the Houston Chronicle (http://*******/1JCEswB ). "The deputy fell to ground. the suspect came over and shot the deputy again multiple times as he lay on the ground."

He said Goforth died at the scene. Detectives were checking security camera video for possible clues.

"We are actively searching for suspect right now," Gilliland said. "I can tell you with diligence and justice the suspect will be caught. And he will be brought to justice ... This is a very callous individual."

Harris County Sheriff's deputies and homicide investigators joined officers from other agencies, including the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Houston Police Department, in searching for the suspect.

"This is a very tough moment right now for the Harris County Sheriffs Office," Gilliland said. "Keep us in your prayers and in your thoughts."

"Bob Goerlitz, president of the Harris County Deputies Organization, said the incident was "shocking."

"We've been warned of things like this, because of public sentiment nationally and events over the last few years ... It's just horrific. That's the only way to describe it."

Violence begets violence.

And supporting it heralds an end to civil society which equates to an end to civil rights.
It follows one of two paths. North Korean style police state or Iraq / Syria style anarchy with terrorism running amok. Neither are countries you should want to live in.

maybe this guy feels like he is at war with the police? That would make any of them targets for the crimes of the few. Pretty funny to read the responses to my comment.

Hate begets hate; violence begets violence; toughness begets a greater toughness. We must meet the forces of hate with the power of love... Our aim must never be to defeat or humiliate the white man, but to win his friendship and understanding.
“The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy, instead of diminishing evil, it multiplies it. Through violence you may murder the liar, but you cannot murder the lie, nor establish the truth. Through violence you may murder the hater, but you do not murder hate. In fact, violence merely increases hate.
Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”[7]

OMG HOW DAR U SAY VIOLENCE BEGOUSE? VIOLENCE!!!11! I CANT EVEN COMRPEHEND SOMEONE TALKING ABOUT A LARGER ISSUE THEN THE BULLET FLY THRU DA AIR IN DA COP.

If the police didnt wage war against a segment of the population then that segment of the population wouldn't feel the need to wage war with the police. You guys are some basic mofos to not see this.

If you think this is a police state where the police are waging surprise executions against people pumping gas, you have lost your damn mind.

Go troll somewhere else with your faux justice anger.

Thas YOUR mindset. But out of the 300 million people in this country do you think they all share it? Maybe a segment of the population does believe the police are attacking them.

And you still didnt understand my statement. lol. Unbelievable how smart and how stupid some of you are.

Looks personal. The guy shot him in the head, then shot him 3 times while he was already dead on the ground. My guess is he knows the guy.

That said, I think the police have some soul-searching to do about all the various people they shoot and how that might end up getting them shot just like this.

I thought so too, but the cop was filling up after a traffic accident. How would the perp know he would be there at that time? Coincidence?

That said, it's 15 minutes from where I live. Actually was getting my hair cut this morning and one of the stylists mentioned she passed by it just after it had happened as she lives in the area. Said cops were racing past her towards the station, she knew something was up. Apparently the cops meet at that station frequently. It's really not that bad of an area of town.

Oh I'm sure people do exist who believe they are under attack by the police. I'm sure they are also the same people who think we are under attack by aliens and snake people.

Err..yes. They are known as minorities.

You maybe remember such classic stories as: 12 year old murdered by cops, man shopping murdered by cops, man strangled by police, man killed in back of police vehicle. Or other stories such as man shot in house on botched raid, child crippled by flash bang thrown on crib.

and those had what, exactly, to do with the random guy pumping gas?

Sounds to me like someone who had a personal vendetta with the cop and waited for him to fill up.

He probably knew he went there about everyday.

First let me say that this was a senseless tragic killing, I'm glad that they caught the shooter.

As far as your comment though, the pendulum has been swinging the way of a police state for a long time. This is NOT the way to push back because it simply makes the cops more jumpy and quicker on their triggers but decades of abuse and overuse of power with almost complete impunity has led to an us versus them mentality. For the longest time that attitude was just held by the police, now even average law abiding citizens are seeing it and so the attitude is now shared by both sides.

The police need to blink first and start policing their own instead of covering for each other when they cross the line. No more "testilying", no more rough rides, no more shoot first attitude, no more escalating situations instead of at least attempting to deescalate them, stop the insane overuse of no-knock warrants against non-violent offenders, stop being revenue collectors, stop starting confrontations that end in a civilian being killed over selling a loose cigarette to an adult, stop committing highway robbery and extortion to steal peoples property without so much as charging them with a crime, stop using violence as a fist resort. Basically they need to revert back to the peace officers of old instead of the door kicking jackbooted thugs that many of them have became.

More and more of those they are supposed to protecting and serving have lost all trust in them and those numbers are growing every day. This is a sad and horrific incident, my thoughts are with the family of the officer and I am glad the shooter will never breathe free air again, I just hope they don't use it as an excuse to raise the level of force they use.
