DALLAS, Texas (Reuters) -- Joanne Webb is a mother of three, a Baptist, a booster of the town of Burleson, Texas, and a former schoolteacher. She also faces trial for being a smut merchant.

Webb, 43, was arrested in November by two undercover police officers for selling sexual toys and charged with violating Texas obscenity laws. She could face up to a year in jail and a fine of $4,000 if convicted.
Two undercover police officers posed as a couple trying to spice up their love life and Webb sold the woman a vibrator. Webb instructed her on its use and explained how it could enhance lovemaking.

That's where she got into trouble.

Texas law allows for the sale of sexual toys as long as they are billed as novelties, BeAnn Sisemore, a Fort Worth attorney representing Webb, told the Houston Chronicle before a gag order was issued by the judge presiding over the case. But when a person markets sex toys in a direct manner that shows their actual role in sex, then that person is subject to obscenity charges, she told the newspaper.

Reading this link leads me to think that they are just pressing charges because her and her husband are the town sluts.

good thing they're doing that instead of catching rapists murderers and drug dealers.

or people who drag black people with a rope behind their white pickup truck

What really bothers me is that if she had just told the UC's "These are for novelty purposes only" and left it at that... She'd be fine. But because she took the time to explain the best uses etc... it's suddenly illegal and this is at an ADULT TOY PARTY!!!! HELLO?! IT'S NOT LIKE PEOPLE GO THERE TO BUY TIC TACS!!!!

and it was an undercover sting at that. They probably devoted quite a few man hours to think up the sting and implement it. All I can say is a big WTF???!?!?!

anyways, most small rural towns ANYWHERE have wierd laws like this. they just never get enforced. the person who said that they are pressing charges with an ulterior motive is almost certainly right.

Oh heavens forbid adults should know what a vibrator does and how it can ehance their sexual play. Lock this woman up and throw away the key. We wouldn't want to upset the Puritans among us with such unnatural acts of sin.

The greater irony is that if she didn't show them how to use it, and the people took the toys home and used them improperly and injured themselves, they would turn around and sue the person that sold it to them for not showing them how to use it properly.

Repost. Don't you people ever go to P&N?

I searched for "Joanne Webb" Nothing came up... Get over yourself.

Might search a little harder by going to P&N and looking at the top 20 threads there. Especially since this is a news thread and there *might* be a small chance it was posted in the NEWS forum.
