Are they determining obesity through BMI or another method?
Didn't read the article? They are using >35 BMI (= severe obesity and upwards) as the cutoff.

I know BMI is bullshit at low values, and when applied to athletes in general, but that cutoff is pretty high. Being >35 BMI and not fat means you are a world class superstar bodybuilder.

So if you applied to a company say, tomorrow and their DNA screen revealed you have a much higher risk for prostate cancer than average you would be not be hired?. Again, if this is ever implemented (full DNA scans allowed) the amount of people living off the government would be staggering as they would never be hired by anyone. Are you willing to pay the inevitable huge tax increases or should fat/stupid/cancer-prone folks just be euthanized?..

No, because they will be hired as public employees.

Like conservatives. They resist change. They are poorly educated because they think education is a liberal plot. They reject science, math and facts, preferring faith and what makes them feel good. They are intolerant and lack empathy. This means hard to work with and poor customer service. They are greedy so are more likely to steal. It's simply good business practice not to hire undesirables.

A good HR officer wouldn't hire you since you're the one preaching hatred and bigotry. You'd be a poor choice for anyone to hire.

How about the fact that the employee will cost them more in health insurance than they'll probably ever be worth to the company. Also, you must be fat.

care to back that up?

i hear this shit all the time and i have yet to see proof that it is true.

That's all well and good, but then eating healthy is that much more important. Nobody is born morbidly obese, you don't get to stuff your face full of fast food every day and call it a genetic condition. Unless of course the genetic condition is called stupid, in which case you most definitely can discriminate against stupid.

Edit: It gets really old listening to fatty defenders who claim that "Waaaah, you're ignorant and mean to fatties." Americans have the same basic DNA as the rest of the world, but our obesity rates were much higher must sooner. The world is catching up, but we're still the fattest. Hmmmm, I wonder why that could be... couldn't be a cultural problem now could it...

I'm thinking you dont understand the interplay between stress, diet, sleep and cultural factors. Whats interesting is not that the general population is overweight, but that it isn't worse. BTW, it appears that obesity is leveling off.

The obese are not a protected class under federal anti-discrimination laws. That means what they're doing is not illegal. It doesn't make it right though.

Doesn't make it wrong either.

People need to stop being obese.

SNIP

Good job at making these numbers help your agenda. A certain bmi does not 100% qualify that you are overweight. There are several important factors that go into it, such as age or muscle density. And a bmi over 25 "may indicate" a person is overweight. Good try though. 😉

I didn't realize that stress, diet, sleep and culture were genetic. Are those or are those not things that are within a person's control?

The fact is, people with genetic predispositions of all types have to take certain steps to ensure their health. Diabetics need to regulate their sugar intake. Why do fatties get a pass from so many people and told they have no responsibility for their own health? "They can't help it, it's genetic!"

Although that may be true for a majority of overweight people, being fat sometimes is no more controllable than skin color or sex. Its simply part of your genetic makeup. I am not talking about these super morbidly obese people either, but then again, neither were you. Carrying around extra fat can be just as much a result of bad habits as bad genes. So this would seem, in some cases, to fit the traditional definition of discrimination. But since fat is not a protected class, they haven't broken any laws.

Absolutely disagree. There has been an explosion of obesity across the world (3rd world countries as well have been especially hard hit. I believe technically there are more diabetics in india than in the US for example) over the last 50 years. I doubt anyone can claim there has been a similar explosive change in human DNA over the last 50 years, or even in the last 500 years. 50 years ago most diabetics were kids and were almost exclusive type 1 (the autoimmune variant rather than your body simply ignoring the signal to store sugar and accumulate even more fat over time).

What is happening is culture is changing. Not just culture here, but culture across the world. Human caloric expenditure has dropped greatly as less people are farmers and have more sedentary lifestyles whilst caloric intake has greatly expanded due to the greater availability of cheap, high in calories, food. Even with that said, if you were to compare lifestyles between the obese and non obese, the differences are glaring. The biggest ones I say I have noticed (I am a member of the healthcare field) is the difference in exercise and the willingness of non obese individuals to not necessarily turn to comfort mechanisms of life (ie cars, elevators, seated lawnmowers, etc). Heck when people study skinny people they notice things like they even fidget more whilst seated in a chair than their obese counterparts. There are a few obese individuals who are obese for psychological reasons, depression and various personality disorders, and even fewer who are obese due to endocrine disorders, but honestly the majority of it is poor lifestyle choices and upbringing with obesity promoting traits (ie never encouraged to play sports, never being exposed to fresh fruits and veggies regularly, being taught soda is a rare treat and not a water replacement, etc). Its interesting how when studied, children of obese people accept a much larger BMI as normal than non obese people. Honestly,is it is fair to say, children of obese parents who become obese never had a chance? I could somewhat agree with it, though I still like to think we all have some degree of willpower to change if we want.

If you make the argument that obese people are addicted to food, I can accept that (still addiction is not an excuse to allow yourself to continue a self destructive lifestyle). If you make the argument there are things in food that are promoting obesity, I can accept that. If you make the argument that obesity is simply genetic and if you have certain genes you are bound to be obese, I strongly strongly disagree.

There is fat and there is obese.

If a person is so overweight that it makes it difficult for people to fit through the hallway or are in other ways a sheer physical obstruction, then this is a valid requirement.

An example was the guy who was too fat to fit in the control cab of a NYC subway car. He sued them for discrimination.

Look, I really do not CARE if you can't get the job you want because you can't fit your fat ass in the cab. Midgets do not play pro B-Ball either, but I sure as hell don't think they have the right to sue over it.

The biggest issues isn't the chips you eat or eating too much fat...but its too much sugar in our diets. Everything is filled with it these days. For Low Fat / No Fat items to taste good sugar is added. Another issue is with HFCS...it is processed by the liver and its much more easily converted by the body to fat.

Don't forget that for someone to eat alot and become fat, there is usually more to it...some form of abuse, depression, or other medical ailment.

"Eating a box of Twinkies" is just a sterotype

Don't take your anger out on me just because you're fat. Get on a treadmill and try green vegetables instead of Twinkies. You can thank me later.

Let me see if I got this straight. I must be fat because you can't grasp using an example to illustrate a point. Fascinating. Maybe you should find a doctor to extract your head from your colon. You can thank me later.

BTW, obesity comes from two areas:

1. Bodily efficiency. The blacks are a pretty good example of this. After several generations of becoming leaner, harder, more efficient people (the ones who weren't died in transit, or in the fields) you get a really high-performance vehicle.

That you then pour sugar down the tank in the form of Popeye's and Taco Bell.

2. Lifestyle change. As pointed out before, give a person who has lived starving junk food and they will baloon up. Too many quickly absorbed calories that their bodies just go "OMG WE NEEDZ TO STORE THIZ FOR LATERZ!!!!".

So, naturally, India will have a problem with diabetes when you distribute ho-ho's to the recently starving.

I was being quite serious. I see no reason for a business to hire fat/stupid/defective people when it will impact the profitability of the business in the long run. It's simply good business practice not to hire undesirables.

Don't let the door hit you on the ass on the way out. 😉

In the real world few of those factors are controllable. To a small degree, but when you can tell your boss to suck it without repercussions let us know. If you aren't overweight now it's because you can afford to divorce yourself from what most have to deal with or you have genes which would leave you in dire straits for most of our natural history. I'm not going through the whole cascade of hormones and subsequent inflammatory responses which lead to things like insulin resistance which is very much a factor. I'll let people think gays are inherently and willfully deviant, phrenology scientifically explains why blacks are inferior, that chemical addiction is solely a moral issue and not gaining weight is matter of willpower. I guarantee that by disturbing your sleep cycle you WILL gain not only weight, but a large part will be metabolically active fat which in turn plays hell with the rest of your metabolism.
