Texas hospital will not hire fat people

Are they determining obesity through BMI or another method?

Are they declining smokers and people who practice other stupid habits?

Good, hopefully they also screen out people with allergies. Are there even places that still hire people that use tobacco?

Well, that's their loss. Discriminating against obese people doesn't really make sense unless the job type is physically demanding. I do hope that the bad PR makes them reconsider the policy.

How about the fact that the employee will cost them more in health insurance than they'll probably ever be worth to the company. Also, you must be fat.

They should also screen for any genetic defects or problems that will cost more in the long run, do in depth family histories also. They shouldn't be forced to hire rejects and defectives.

The obese are not a protected class under federal anti-discrimination laws. That means what they're doing is not illegal. It doesn't make it right though.

Why? Unlike skin color, sex, sexual orientation, your weight is totally something under your control. Its honestly no different than refusing to hire based on level of education or hairstyle someone is rocking. Heck, I've applied for jobs where I would be denied employment for tobacco use. I don't like it, but they really want to discourage certain behaviors and lifestyles with their clientele so it makes sense.

I will never vote for weight to become protected status. People are responsible for their own health and making weight a protected status undermines that self responsibility in that regard.

Good.

A hospital should be setting an example for health.

I use to work for someone who wouldn't hire anyone who he felt like their eyes were too far apart or too close together......

Being grossly overweight shows a distinct lack of self-control. It doesn't make you a terrible person, but you shouldn't be in a hospital giving health advice either.

Being grossly obese is just not being able to control yourself. Kind of like being gay.

Yep I went there, not to knock gays but to say the general ignorance of people regarding obesity is astounding.

From a business standpoint it makes sense. From the human aspect its petty.
One could also make an argument that hiring only the most attractive people would be good for businesses as well. Where do we draw the line?

Although that may be true for a majority of overweight people, being fat sometimes is no more controllable than skin color or sex. Its simply part of your genetic makeup. I am not talking about these super morbidly obese people either, but then again, neither were you. Carrying around extra fat can be just as much a result of bad habits as bad genes. So this would seem, in some cases, to fit the traditional definition of discrimination. But since fat is not a protected class, they haven't broken any laws.

Although it might be true it's not. Gtg so details have to wait, but for now I'll say that were cavemen who face starvation daily biologically living in a culture that wants to kill us. Theres not much real choice.
