Imagine blaming the guy for not reading the manual on how to open the car door in an emergency. Is that really a hill people are willing to die on? Why tf is there a manual to open the door. Yeah but in a moment of panic while the vehicle is on fire, you don't have time to RTFM, that's the issue. The doors should be mechanical by default, no override, just mechanical. You shouldn't have to read a manual to know how to exit a car on fire. Even if you read it ahead of time let's be honest most people will gloss over stuff like that and think "I'll never need that".

You need to RTFM manual BEFORE a situation like this happens. Especially important if you are under the influence.
You drive an older higher milage F-150. Modern vehicles do not operate the same as they did.

Yea, it's complete bullshit, and violates safety 101. There needs to be outside handles, and there needs to be inside handles. You can add electric on top of that, but the core function needs to mechanical. Complain about your precious styling, and I'll mandate yellow and black reflective stickers to go around the mechanical handles. Complain some more, and see what else I can add that you'll hate... I wish I were in charge around here...

I think that the "OMG! 5000°!!!" thing is a bit overblown. You're dead if you get trapped in a fire regardless of if it's super hot. The fact that your bones get burned up as well is pretty irrelevant.

I think that certain things should absolutely have mechanical fallbacks. These would be steering, brakes, door handles..

Every vehicle equipped with an electronic door already has a mechanical fallback.

Imagine if you read a story were a guy driving his brand new F-150 home while under the influence crashed into a concrete culvert and burned alive. It has happened and will happen again. The ONLY reason you read this story is because it involves the Tesla CT and the latest political affiliations their CEO has.

This isn't some intellectual abstraction. Odds are excellent that the vehicle will be in a wreck before it finally gets to the junkyard. They won't all be deadly, but it happens enough. I've been in one myself where I beat death, and I've seen others happen where they weren't so lucky.

I was curious so I looked up the instructions for the Cybertruck. For the back seat you have to remove a rubber mat from the bottom of the door pocket and pull on the hidden cable hook. What a fucking death trap. And if you tell me cars X, Y, and Z have similar procedure then they are pieces of shit too.

For starters, I don't like the Tesla Model 3 flush door handles. My buddy has one & they freeze shut every year. He carries around a spray bottle of ice-melter because he doesn't want to chip the paint to manually de-ice the area around the handle in order to open the door lol.



The Cybertruck prototype had pop-out handles, so at least if there was a manual backup option. iirc they were fully flush & relied on a motor to extend, with the idea being that they could be manually released in the even of power loss, I'd imagine.



The updated version has no exterior grab handle. The Armored windows were also a concern to me, especially if you needed outside assistance:

My previous Jeep Renegade was fully electric everything & had electrical issues. It locked me in sometimes because the electronic locks would go on the fritz. The e-brake button wouldn't disengage so I couldn't drive because I was stuck in the parking lot (had to disconnect the battery to fix that one lol). I'm not a huge fan of systems that don't have good, obvious backup systems in the event of problems!

My kia ev6 has the same stupid door handle design as the model 3. They are annoying in the winter but so far I've gotten away with just banging on them a bit with my fist when they are frozen over.

Tesla added remote preheat & remote motorized door unlatch features. Although I think it's silly to have to preheat your car to unlatch the door handles LOL:

To be fair, the Mustangs have frameless windows on the doors & drop an inch automatically when you open the door in order to clear the upper seal and THAT gets stick in the winter, haha!

I wish they could just make EVs like normal cars, but electric. No need for all these electronics. In principle they should have less electronics than ICE even. The only electronics that are really needed is the motor controls and the charging circuitry and guess regen braking. The actual driving and using hardware like doors and windows should be fairly straightforward.

Yeah I hope the Slate actually goes somewhere. It's something I would consider. Although 4x4 is practically a must for a truck otherwise you're just sliding all over the place, so that's one downside of it. Maybe with an EV it's less of an issue since it's heavier.

In normal truck you don't have much weight in the rear. The slate will have the motor in the rear along with the battery in the center so it will probably be pretty close to 50/50 weight distro. And like all modern cars it will have traction and stability control.

We live in a high snow area & my buddy bought a RWD Tesla Model 3 a few years ago, which I thought was a bad idea...I can't BELIEVE how good it is in the snow!! It is nearly a 50/50 weight distribution.
