Be interesting to see how this goes in crash testing as well.
Theres pretty strict rules on how cars interact with squishy humans or other cars in the EU, I'm wondering how it's going to be bullet proof but not pedestrian skull proof!

Motortrend has a ton of info:

Excellent article on the development:

On bulletproofing:

i think it looks about as ugly as a countach did in the 80s. we are just too old to appreciate how f* amazing this must look to a 12yo child.

You might be right. ...and already from this morning to now, I've actually grown from a little vomit in my mouth, to actually kinda digging it. ...it has a Blade Runner vibe to it. The angles are quite stark, and while it has that over-designed, obnoxious "car ad" vibe to it, like every damn car today can only be shown in front of some Frank Ghery building, I think I like it. It's ridiculous in a maybe-good-way.

At least it doesn't look exactly like every other truck that has always been made.

From Musk's Twitter:

1. "Tesla 2 person electric ATV will come at first as an option for Cybertruck"

2. Re - solar: "Will be an option to add solar power that generates 15 miles per day, possibly more. Would love this to be self-powered. Adding fold out solar wings would generate 30 to 40 miles per day. Avg miles per day in US is 30."

3. The camper is an accessory that will be for sale

Here is my take on it. I think there will be people who will buy this, but I am pretty sure most of the people who will buy this would have never bought an F-Series, Silverado/Sierra, or Ram anyway. Tesla fans are always going to like anything Tesla comes up with and hate anything from any other manufacture especially from the Big 3. There may be a few that switch from the Big 3 trucks to the Cybertruck, but I don't think Ford, GM or FCA have anything to worry about. By and large, your tradition truck buyer is not going to be interested in this even with the specs. So everyone (Tesla, Rivian, Ford, GM, FCA) is going to be just fine.

Am European and think it looks hideous, plus it's not going to fit in any European car parks or even streets.

yep, this thing is way too big for Europe. It's nearly the same size as your traditional transit/transport trucks, which aren't generally privately-owned/personal vehicles.

Ok. Just had the chance to watch the actual reveal video.
Is he always this terrible in front of a crowd? He's a truly awful public speaker.

I actually like the way he talks, it's more personable & relatable.

The problem is that he fizzles out at the presentation. Same thing with the Model Y "well, here it is..." and that's it lol.

He just sounds like he doesn't really want to be there. Like he'll jump at any excuse to put the spotlight elsewhere. When they were dropping those balls in the tube onto the glass he didn't explain any of it he just mumbled a bit then got over excited and got the guy to throw it at the window.
I'm an awful public speaker but I could genuinely do better than that, he's constantly distracted by random heckles from the audience as well.

Wut the base Cybertruck is 39K with a 250 mile range? Something curious is happening with battery cost/development that they haven't shared yet.

The tri-motor with 500 mile range is only a couple thousand more than the Y Performance model. That means to get that range it will need at least twice the battery pack size and more efficient motors. Are the prices the actual MSRP or their "after savings" price? Should I even bother with the Y if I can a bunch more range by waiting another few months?

Even if you upped the purchase price 10K to wipe out that gimmickry that would still not seem to totally explain what's going on with the likely battery size based on ranges versus the cost of the vehicles. Kind of in the same way nobody could figure out what's up with the Semi ranges based on existing technology. Is the buried news here that they've made some kind of major battery improvement that is non-public so far?

A 500-mile battery range has always been my magic number. I'll test-drive the Y to see if I want one instead of the truck, but:

1. It has a 500-mile battery option
2. It has a functional bed
3. It seats 6 people
4. It will most likely have the the new million-mile battery pack
5. Plenty of clearance & an WD option for winter driving
6. Camper mode looks awesome...ventilated bed tent with electric cooktop
7. Super-strong body & glass design
8. Full-self driving is an option

Guess we'll find out 24 months from now!

My guess is mass-production cost-reduction. They have the one in Nevada, another in NY, one is being built in China, and they're planning on one for Germany. The Y is going to sell like hotcakes & by the time the truck rolls off the line, they should have plenty of production going on, battery-wise.

... In fact I wouldn't be that comfortable taking one into the wilderness even without using any excess power, it's not like you can take a couple of jerry cans full of electricity with you.

I think this already has more range than a full tank and a couple extra gas cans.

Though it's still slow and impractical for charging an EV, electric energy is much MUCH easier to get from the wilderness than refined petroleum.

Wind, hydroelectric, solar, ...

Good luck powering an EV on wind or solar using the stuff that you are carrying. I'd much rather use a diesel with some cans in that situation.

Point is that using the batteries to run a cooker and an air conditioning unit all night is going to leave you with a non functioning vehicle in the morning.

Anyway, I'm sure you'd only do that at camping places that have power connections for RVs.

the style suck but then again i think the style of the Chevy avalanche is hideous but Chevy sold a a lot of them.

no bumper... I live in the country and having a practical work truck with heavy duty bumper with winches and aux lighting is a must around here. this looks like something a yuppie will buy to haul his ass to starbucks.

They are also only asking for a $100 deposit as opposed to $2500 for the Y. Does make you wonder if they are hoping for a miracle too. I really hope it's true.

I wasn’t talking about size. Tesla truck is massive. It’s going to make my land cruiser look small. I was thinking more about accepting new ideas and liking sci-fi future theme of the Cybertruck. I just thought Europeans would like it vs conventional truck design. Same with the Chinese. I think they’re going to love the futuristic design.

I was looking forward to an electric pickup, couldn't be more disappointed. This thing is an SUV with a small bed, and it's butt ugly.
Why not just build a proper truck that has some utility? I don't work in some post apocalyptic wasteland, I need a truck for the burbs.
