Terrorists hack power network through Canada's computer systems

I called a family member who lives in Canada. She said that the news reported that it was terrorists who hacked the power company's computers that put everything into a blackout. Funny that you didn't hear that on American news.

I knew something was up when they reported that from Toronto to the East Coast of the USA was out of power. If I can design a redundant, fault-tolerant computer network then surely power networks can be that way too? Then how can one lightning bolt take down power for 1/3 of Canada, and North America?

I knew something was up with what the news was reporting. Despite what my immediate family said, logic was leading me away from what the propagandists were telling me.

Edit: Weather region shows NO lightning storms

If there was reliable story stating that terrorists were involved, it would be all over U.S. tv.

My family member is actually a capitalist and doesn't believe in aliens, conspiracies, etc. but is sensible. They said they were reporting it but now they've changed their stories.

Yea, something like that, but on a grander scale, sir.

No, I don't know what back bacon cryptography is. Maybe Canadian bacon cryptography. This is terrorism! Who did it though I don't know.

The sensationalist news will jump on anything that makes people jump up in their seat without checking it for validity. Which is exactly what you're doing! Perhaps you should apply for a job at said news channel.

Ho-ho. More clueless Canada-bashing by another clueless American. The power failure was most likely caused by one of your own, OHIO. I suggest you get your "Capitalists" in there back in line, so us "Socialists" don't have to deal with your incompetent breaches in power supply.

The problem was from south of the boarder, not in Canada.

However, if you read the article there are a lot of discrepancies. Canada says there was a fire at a Pennsylvania power plant, another says it was a fire at a Manhattan power plant.

I am not blaming Canada, I am saying the powers that be are trying to pull the wool over our eyes.

Sure. We only get 15% (max.) of our power from you anyways; meanwhile some of your states depend almost ENTIRELY on Alberta for natural gas - so say bye bye to your heating systems there.

We also depend almost entirely upon Canada for comedians. We really shouldn't p!ss them off or we'll lose our entertainment! ;)

That's why we've got those Deepwater LNG ports in NEPA review right now.

Sorry, don't want to turn this into yet another Canada-US bashing contest, but facts are facts.

I have a suggestion for all this crap. STFU until the people who can figure out what actually happened explain it. These "reports" of lightnening and hackers is all fine and well but it is PURE speculation. I did hear a report about the possibilty of it be hackers and I am in the US ofcourse it was a clearchannel communications AM station so we know how reliable that is

:p

Anywho - there are MANY factors at fault no matter what started the cascade. Outdated equipment(or unmaintained) and design being probably the biggest factor. Power grids are funny and aren't as easy to manage as one might think. The company I work for has a division that works with power utilities doing electrical consulting and design. There are alot of things that need to go on for you to be able to flip your light switch.

The current economy.

Hmmm 2.5% growth in the 2nd quarter, 3.5% projected for the 3rd.
Three year highs for US exports(better than Clintons last year)
Manufacturing is up
Buisness to Buisness Buisness is up
Consumer Spending is up
Consumer Confidence is up
New Home sales still up
Intrest rates still amazingly low
Stock Market has rebounded
Bonds are being sold off somewhat

The only thing bad about the economy is unemployment and thats already started slowing and is ALWAYS the last to recover after a recession.

The downward spiral started in 2000, Q4 2000 we had no growth, Q1 2001 we had negative growth, the recession started officaly in March of 2001, a recession is two or more quarters of no or negative growth. The recession last 11 months, during it we had a major terrorist attack the compounded issues. The recession technically ended in Q2 of 2002, thats around the time we had major issues with corprate corruption and cooking the books that dated back to 1996/7/8. The growth was there but it was slow, because manufacturing was down because of unemployment.

Anyone that thinks the economy is bad right now, I got news for you IT ISNT, and it will NEVER be as good as it was during the reckless Dot.com era. Unemployment claims are under the level which is deemed a weak job market. And is stabilizing. Every other part of the economy has to recover before the job market to recover, and thats whats been happening.

Sorry for thread crapping, but it irrates me to hear people say the economy is "bad", the economy is recovering, its the job market that is bad, and that to is in the process of recovering.

Ah, so Clinton's economic policies are finally kicking in then? Good to see.

I thought I read somewhere where someone had stolen their tank and went on a joy ride. It crashed onto the power plant treadmill that had the mouse on it, the mouse died so now they are trying to train a beaver to do it. So far the cheese is not cutting it and they are seeking suggestions.
