Terrorist attempts to blow up Federal Reserve Bank

A Middle Eastern man tried to blow up the Federal Reserve Bank in Lower Manhattan this morning, law-enforcement sources told the Post.

The terrorist parked a van filled with what he thought were explosives outside of the Liberty Street building, sources said, then tried to set them off using a cell phone detonator.

The suspect, who was not immediately identified, was provided the explosives from an undercover FBI agent that he met on the Internet and believed to be an accomplice, the sources said.

The suspect raised red flags after posting about Jihad online, they said.

The agent made contact with the jihadist about three months ago. The suspect told him that he wanted to blow up the bank, the sources said.

The suspect and the FBI agent planned the fake attack for months, sources said.

This morning, after parking the van, he went to the Millennium Hotel near the World Trade Center, where he called the cell phone in the van.

It did not explode, and he was arrested by federal agents.

The terrorist was the only one arrested, sources said.

I don't understand what is news and belongs in what section since there are so many news stories in off topic I put in here.

Would this not be entrapment? I mean seriously - if the feds didn't provide him with the "materials", he likely would never have attempted to commit the act.

Thats one stupid terrorist . Had he succeeded he would have been an American hero. I doubt it was a terrorist

In this day and age what does it matter? The Patriot act allows the government to do whatever the fuck they want. That dude has no rights, and neither do you.

My defense would be, "I knew they were government agents; I thought I was doing my patriotic duty by following orders. 😕"

This always comes up during these cases. The cops know how to walk the line. He might not have had the means but would have committed the crime if given the means.

Doubtful. Sting operations happen all the time. Posing as hitmen, drug dealers, etc... it's not much different here. Merely providing the means and opportunity, when asked for them, isn't enough to call entrapment.

Of course context matters. Did they simply follow the guy's lead, or were they being too suggestive throughout the operation? I'm sure the feds have a "rule book" or sorts they follow which lists exactly the kinds of things they can and cannot say, provide, suggest, etc...

I don't think so. Law enforcement is given a fuckton of leeway with terrorism cases. There's a national security angle to this, because it sews the seeds of doubt into potential terrorists. They never know whether or not the dude helping them plan an attack is for real, or a fed.

I thought that centralized banking was the greatest act of terrorism ever perpetrated on the American people, was I misinformed?

😀

but seriously...I hope some real info and/or cell-busting occurred due to this operation. Otherwise, it just looks like a lot of time and effort to bust some random jihadist.

btw, does this mean I should stop frequenting jihadonline.org?

haha, I stayed in that hotel when I went to NYC. Direct view of the WTC reconstruction process.

I have a feeling this is going to be another one of those FBI pushed someone into doing something crazy things. We'll see.

Proof the TSA does not work.

Good thing they caught him though. Imagine if he had gotten the explosives elsewhere, like Walmart. (could easily make explosives using gun ammo or various household chemicals for example)

This guy is probably guilty as sin and will undoubtedly (based upon the metric tons of evidence against him) plead guilty ... spending the rest of his life in confinement.

I love all the "conspiracy" theories lauded within this thread. If you don't like the Government ... change it or get out. Stop bitching ...
