terrorist attack in Orlando gay club - 50 dead, another 53 wounded

The "assault weapon" terminology is stupid, as you've said, but people gravitate towards an easy, "scary" term to throw around when discussing these things. Unfortunately this term leads to a great many confusions and misunderstandings and as a result, retarded policy.

"Semi-automatic firearm" is best. I think "self-loading" is even better. But good luck educating people. "Assault" sounds scarier.

You know what sounds even scarier? 50 dead, 50 wounded.

You know what I think of all this, honest to death; I'm glad it happened. You get what you deserve. If I can't have happiness, no one can.
sappy bitches.

Just heard on the news, the shooter was interviewed by the FBI 3 times. I'm going to assume he is on the terror watch list, if he is shits gonna get real interesting between Hillary, Trump, the NRA and Congress.

Sadly this won't even put a dent in the security theatre paradigm.

Apparently my liberal nephew read something this morning that said the shooter was a Trump supporter and republican. He was spewing that crap in my wife's ear when I came downstairs and I showed him how wrong he was. He had a hard time handling the truth and started calling me a racist because I called the Muslim terrorist what he is and muttered something about gun loving republicans on his way out of the house. Poor kid. Is that the kind of crap they are teaching him at his university?

This morning there was word that it was a hate crime (which it still is) with the man getting into an altercation with some of the gay people at the club before going back to his car and getting guns. I believe the initial spin was it was a "minute men" type person.

This is why people should hold off until all info is out before spouting off.

And what truly effective measure will work? banning guns is as naive as banning Muslims.

though i am surprised to hear that he was talked with the fbi 3 times, the bullshit his father talks about and the domestic violence conviction (that should forced him to give up his guns). seems there was a bunch of red flags with this guy.

M-16 is the same damned gun, more or less, you can even modify the sear on an AR15 and make it full auto I believe.

You're just preaching things I am already aware of at this point.

Sorry, I'm not meaning to derail the thread myself, the whole incident was pathetic.

The fact the guy could walk in there on his lonesome and kill/maim 100+ people with what he was carting around that was solely designed for that purpose was my point.

There are numerous non military based firearms that could/can do the same thing. The Assault Weapons Ban proved how it's just "feel good" legislation that has little practical effect on how a weapon can be used.

In fact, did you know the AR15 and it's ammo is/are purposely neutered, even the military version? The AR15 was designed to maim, it takes more people and resources to save a wounded soldier than to have to deal with corpses. The bullet is relatively small and relatively underpowered.

The full auto argument is just flat stupid, here's one of the best shooters I've seen using full auto: https://youtu.be/ur6PTtSe4H8

A shooter could use a double action revolver and be just as effective.

Hell, look at these folks with 100 year old firearm tech.

He could have done as much damage just as easily with a Glock and a bagful of magazines, or a flipping revolver and a couple of hours of practice with speed loaders.

It's all a moot point in the coming years anyway, Hillary will be elected, the Supreme Court will be loaded with likely 4 new anti gun justices, and it's all gone forever.

Anyone know if Howell is a Trump support and/or Republican?

Guess its too politically correct to thank the first responders and express your condolences to the family and instead its best you thank the people for supporting you for being "right."

Hey, what do you expect from an ASSHOLE?
Crap comes out, this is what assholes are usually good at.

(I didn't expect ANYTHING else than T. being among the first using this tragedy to his advantage, in the typical primitive, narcissist, almost embarrassing way he always does)

This sure is a fun thread...😱

He was being watched, interviewed several times.. but had committed no crimes. This is going to get pretty interesting... and probably not in a good way. That sucking sound.. that's the sound of more of our rights being stripped away in the name of safety. 🙁

Nope.

Go check your facts.

So easy in Florida. No dealer necessary.

I don't know what to tell you. I've actually sold a firearm before, and we transferred it properly. I have actual experience doing it, not reading about it on the internet. This would be Indiana though, which is part of the confusion... the states have different rules in place, and different degrees of enforcement. If Florida makes it easier, I guess I have no experience to say otherwise. I can tell you that your post hinted that the entire country runs the same way, and that's just not true.

OK, so it seems that right now the main thing being requested is blood.
Even if yours doesnt go straight to Orlando, it will still be used to replenish the stock at your local bank.
Orlando has been requesting lots of it. 53 seriously injured people could probably go thru several hundred pints.

He was probed 3 times by FBI, why the hell still let him buy guns? Why???

Because the FBI found no evidence of criminal activity.

Are you seriously suggesting that someone should be punished based solely on an accusation of wrongdoing? And you further believe that he should still be punished even if the FBI finds no evidence to support that accusation?

I predict that over the next decade there is going to be a MASSIVE effort to make everything truly interconnected.

It's amazing how unconnected we still our, in our connected world. Similar to how only some states share driving records. Get a DUI in one state? No problem, just move to another and you've got a clean record!

There is no reason that all of these different databases can't talk to each other, they just don't. They will soon....

Like I've said before, you aren't telling me anything new.

I seriously doubt one guy with a revolver and speed loaders could have done that kind of damage.

Even a couple Glocks with extended mags.

Being banned from purchasing firearms is not punishment. Letting innocent people killed by firearms for no reason / any reason is punishment for them.

I'm going to politicize this event for a minute, so bear with me.

This incident is providing a very interesting scenario for both sides of the aisle, given the circumstances. It's providing fodder for both nominees. Here are the details and how I see it playing out:

Shooter is Muslim - pro-Trump overall, as the right-wing has better rhetoric about national security.

Victims were LGBTQ - pro-Hillary overall, as the left-wing is seen as the standard-bearer for LGBTQ rights, and this humanizes the LGBTQ community in ways that will cross the aisle. The Republican party has been consistently against LGBTQ rights for the last few decades, so it will be interesting to see how well they can pander to them in one scenario and disparage them in another.

Number of victims - pro-Hillary overall; if this wasn't the "deadliest shooting in history", gun rights would have taken back seat to terrorism. But the AR-15 and proliferation of guns will be getting serious air time, and that plays into Hillary's rhetoric better than Donald's.

Media coverage - pro-Both Candidates; Donald's racism and Hillary's e-mails will be back page news for a while.
