The shooter who killed at least 50 people at a gay nightclub in Orlando has been identified as Omar Mateen, law enforcement sources told The Post.

Mateen was a U.S. citizen with no apparent criminal history, was born to Afghan parents in New York in 1986 and was living in Port St. Lucie, Fla., according to multiple media reports.

Mateen had committed himself to ISIS before carrying out the bloodiest mass murder in US history at a gay nightclub in Orlando on Sunday, federal officials said.

Mateen “made a pledge of allegiance to ISIS,” California Rep. Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, told CNN.

Schiff said the timing and target of the attack can’t be a coincidence.

“The fact that this shooting took place during Ramadan and that ISIS leadership in Raqqa has been urging attacks during this time, that the target was an LGBT nightclub during (LGBT) Pride (month) and, if accurate, that according to local law enforcement the shooter declared his allegiance to ISIS, indicates an ISIS-inspired act of terrorism,” Schiff said.

“Whether this attack was also ISIS-directed, remains to be determined. I’m confident that we will know much more in the coming hours and days.”

Meanwhile, US Sen. Bill Nelson (D-Fla.) cited intelligence sources to say that there “appears to be” a link to Islamic radicalism and ISIS.

“I asked the FBI if there was any connection to Islamic radicalism. There appears to be,” Nelson said. “But they are naturally cautious and waiting throughout to see if if this is, facts emerge.”

“At this point, this is an incident, as I can see it, we can certainly classify as a domestic terror incident,” Jerry Demings of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office said.

Just sickening. So many people innocently going about their lives. And I fear this will devolve into the usual identity politics all around based on initial information I'm hearing.

Again be careful the guy was said to be wearing a vest which could be a bomb vest or a tactical vest to hold guns/ammo. I've seen 3 people at the club interviewed none mentioned a bomb, which maybe they just ran but I'm holding terrorist label unless the racist nut bag that shout up the black church last year is a terrorist too.

I'd certainly call him a terrorist.

I'm not going to say you're wrong I do feel terrorist should have a strong foreign tie otherwise the term gets convoluted like rape vs date rape vs I felt guilty sex.
Same with racist nut bag. I don't want that term getting watered down either.

It fucking sucks to awake reading such news.

Since they are very early in the investigation and the shooting just happened, and some say it might be Islamic terrorism I am ASSUMING the shooter was middle eastern. Otherwise I don't know where such an assumption would come from?

Yeah, the sheriff in the last press conference only confirmed wearing a "suspicious device." He also said "he wasn't from around here" pretty quickly despite the FBI agent saying they had not yet confirmed an identity in the same conference. Next one is supposed to be 9:30AM.

Edit: OK, the news has ID'd him from LE sources: Omar Mateen

Edit 2: 30 yo, from FL, US citizen, Afghan parents.

Oh boy.

I never understood how someone can be so upset at who fucks who (among consenting adults) that they want to commit violence.

It's really outrageous.

So how does 2nd amendment that Trump vigorously supports help in this situation?

Alright its much more suspicious now, I'd still wait a bit more for the terrorist label.

This, however, several elected officials and religious leaders have called for violence against 'the gays' so fucksticks like this can justify their actions. Plus, and this is pure speculation, they may have some deeply rooted latency they cannot and will not acknowledge and that turns into violence against that.

no laws would have prevented this cowardly attack, as much as I would like to see more stringent background checks and maybe show a license to buy ammunition (like sudafed), neither of those would have done a damn thing.
Such a fucking cowardly act, my heart is heavy this morning, yet again 🙁

Domestic terror tactics have long been a part of American history. Just look at the 150 years of the KKK, but its victims were mostly not white, so that part of our history has gone to sleep with the advent of the jihadist extremist. Remember OK City? An example of how 'far-right terrorism', home grown, can go.

This was Islamic terrorism. Just saw it on the news. For every Islamic person in America, there are 5 to 6 gay people. It is weird that I am not aware of any gay terrorist attacks in the last decade but there are plenty of examples of Muslim terror attacks in America. You can take people out of repressive and hateful cultures but can you take the repressive and hateful cultures out of those people?

Identity is everything. The terrorist's foreign identity lead him to the slaughter of Americans. Our leader's stupidity in letting people with such allegiance immigrate is directly responsible. In politics, I hear of a candidate who'd put an immediate stop to such policy.

And the swing state of Florida no less. Think they'll be receptive to cool and coddling words for importing terrorism to America?

Actually you will find much support on these very boards for letting in immigrants and refugees from backward and repressive Islamic countries. I certainly don't understand it.
