Terrible cough for past week, but only late at night...

Anyone have any ideas? I tried water and everything but nothing seems to really help... I just cough terribly late at night and am having trouble sleeping because of it :\

Do you sleep on your back? Your nasal passages could be draining into your throat, which would irritate it.

My two year old is going through the same thing. I thought he was going to cough up a lung about 1am last night. But LadyBuggy has it right...just try different cough medicines (not all at once, hopefully) until you find one that works for you.

I had the same thing a while ago. It would only happen when I'm laying on the bed trying to sleep. When I was standing or sitting upright it happens MUCH less, for whatever reason. So for a week or so I ended up sleeping by sitting upright on my couch.

Ended up I had pnumonia (sp?)

Get a humidifer. Probably dry air affecting your lungs. When the humidity goes below 50% for us none Arizonians, more than coughing will happen -- nosebleeds too.

If you have a low grade fever (99F to 100F) -- get checked for TB (as a dry hacking cough, especially at night, is a sign of it).

Thought you were married to ladybuggy there for a second, then I figured out that she posted before you.

My wife had the same problem a couple of months ago. A cough suppressant, sleeping pills, and a humidifier helped a little bit. It lasted for about 10 days, and then she was fine.

That's interesting, with my house at 40% humidity I should be having all kinds of coughing and nose bleeds... Hmmm, just checked, nope no bleeding.. Or coughing...:Q

Coughing that comes on when laying supine can be indicitive of either an URI (Upper Respiratory Infection (Which can, as Peelucky found out, lead right into pneumonia.)) or possibly bronchitis. (Which may be a specific URI.)

I'd get it checked out, usually very easy to defeat in early stages but it can lead to some pretty nasty stuff.

Also to get some sleep try laying with your upper torso at an upward incline. (As suggested by Peelucky)

Good Luck

I just pop in a cough drop when i go to bed...and yeah...thats it. have as many as needed...and i think its probably pretty hard to choke on a cough drop...they tend to slide down your throat and not get stuck.
