The world didn't draw me in and I didn't dig the active combat system that a lot of people had/have major hard-on's for. The world/lore was the biggest thing though, I just didn't care what about any of the stuff and what was going on, yes, I am one of those people that reads the quests and explorers everything reading lore. I could put up with the combat if the game drew me in, but it didn't. To be fair I didn't get past mid 40's on any of the 3 characters I played either.

I played it for a few months, but it got grindy and boring...I imagine I'll feel the same way about FFXIV soon enough.

I bought the game at launch, played for a week, then uninstalled the game. I tried it again when it went F2P and I found out I had a lot of perks. Reinstalled, then again, only played a week before quitting.

It's just too grindy for me and personally I didn't think the combat was all that. While the graphics are pretty good, I'm not really a fan of the art/character design so I really couldn't get into the game as much as I would have liked. Probably petty complaints but the game isn't for me so I moved on pretty quick.

I do wish the combat had a purpose, ie you swipe certain areas, you get crit%...but I don't think it is that way.

I have a few friends playing, so we're giving it a go ... it's OK. I don't really find myself wanting to play it instead of other games though. I was just curious how others felt about it!

The way people the community is about the Elin race is downright creepy too at times.

I knew the game had to be Korean. It was all anime-styled but it's certainly not Japanese.

Looks pretty. Good thing I stay away from MMOs, they destroy lives.

You mispelled "Terra" twice while the link clearly says "Tera"?
I see this a lot on the FF XIV beta forums too... Its like every FF fan thinks of Terra the FF6 character or something (whose original Japanese name is actually Tina, ironically)

The game is called TERA because it is an acronym for The Exiled Realm of Arborea
I think most people dont even know this, sadly

Anyway, its a nice game for a couple months if you enjoy the combat, and especially soloing BAMs... For me the fun was in leveling a bunch of classes to 60, but since the game has almost no end game content/extremely slow updates, it gets boring fast
And Im not an endgame player to begin with, leveling for me is much more fun

Its still the best looking MMO too, with some of the best art direction Ive seen (if you didnt reach the level 60 areas like three towers, you are definitely missing out)

I really liked Tera, I got up to 49 before the grindy leveling system wore me down into submission. I bought it at launch and so I noticed that by the time I reached level 35 suddenly I wasn't seeing that many people running around the levels anymore. Not sure if I was out-leveling everyone (doubtful) or if my server population was just getting low (likely). But the zones felt empty, it was hard to find pug's to fight the BAM's... and so many of the quests require you to do that to progress. But that wasn't the only problem, the leveling system in general is God awful. I didn't read any of the text, it was just brutal.

I have no doubt that at max level and with a dedicated guild that this game could be fun for the combat alone. Running around killing BAM's and world bosses I am certain could be very fun with the right group. I played Warrior and I really loved the evasion tank game play. Playing as DPS though was mostly so-so, I don't think I could have made it to even level 20 with any of the other classes. Tera does have some really impressively tense and fun fights, I might try to go back and see if I can get to max level just to see what the end-game is all about.

Yeah...I don't care for lore, ha.

Well, at least its free ... and we seem to be enjoying it as a group. We're hoping for a lot of PvP, but we'll see ...

So..... I downloaded and tried this game just because of this thread.

Ughhhh not my cup of tea. It's the exact snoozefest grind from level 1. You just fight same 1 or 2 enemy spamming 1 to 2 skills just to gain EXP- over and over.

What a grind from get-go. I uninstalled it at level 5. This is why I dislike MMOs- the game tries to do so much that it's very simple and basic at lower levels.

I like Diablo clones better- far more action-oriented, similar EXP & skill leveling but far more fun minus all that crafting and static world boredom.

Vivi, have you tried Path of Exile? Amazing game and it's what you may be looking for- great party game with far better action/skills. PoE is dubbed as the true Diablo 3. F2P that's not pay-2-win.

Look at the insane action! MMO can never do this:

No offense, but you can't judge an MMO, especially its combat that quickly. Most are set up to unlock more technique and systems later on instead of overwhelming a player right from the get go.

I'm not saying TERA was super deep or something, but complaining about its combat than saying you like Diablo style combat better that is literally just spamming a few attacks over and over really makes me scratch my head.

It's fair to say MMOs in general are very VERY grindy.

What I just experienced is not unique to TERA. It's way too simple early- 1 type of enemy, spam 1 attack, gain EXP. This requires near zero skill. You're just exchanging numbers, ugh. This stays like this for near-forever.

At least in ARPG, it's similar concept but more spells and gameplay dynamics are varied far earlier. And because the world isn't so huge, the map content is far more 'concentrated' therefore more fun and adventurous. MMOs world may look pretty, but gameplay wise, they're just have 1-3 type of same enemy per 1 area and repeat.

I'm aware MMOs have their perks- static world, big guild experience, economy, etc... Those are just not for me.

I liked a lot of things about Tera. Good graphics and art (except females...), solid combat, good feel overall. But I get bored of MMOs pretty quickly, and Tera was no different. Each zone has the same quests over and over, and the monsters themselves are usually just re-skinned monsters from other zones.

You just want everything from the get go or very quickly. That is fine, but you act like ARPG are different from an MMO with your examples yet they are not and are in reality the most simplistic of the two.

I had my share of fun with the game. The combat kept me playing but the story/lore did not. Bams were decent. Grinding was less an issue for the Americanised version... as I hear the original version was FAR more grindy.

Mostly, this.

I actually like the female art style for most races. Not particularly fond of the Elin :p

The game did alot of things right. Like, the BAM's for example.

But, I mostly play mmo's for the quests, and lore. And, this game doesn't have anything worth noting in that department.

I got my Berserker up to 46 I think, and most every other class up to 35, before the game ran out of fun for me. I do keep it installed though, and go back and play for a couple of hours, about once a month. Since it's free, not hurting me to do so :p

I didn't really care for it much. I didn't like the classes, skills, or the world.

The game couldn't run smoothly on my X2 965BE while my friend's core 2 duo ran at a higher FPS. No optimizations.
This issue was known and talked about since day 1 release of beta. I joined a week before official release and they still didn't fix it. Complained and complained, still nothing. They also tried to pull a quick one on me when it auto renewed and I wanted them to refund it.

TERA would have been a much better game if they had drastically slowed down the leveling process and made it a group-oriented MMO rather than solo-oriented.

BAM fights were genuinely tense and exciting - that should have been the main gameplay focus for leveling up rather than an occasional sidequest. The combat mechanics were solid and fun, especially with a group. Progression should have revolved around leveling parties hunting BAM's, world bosses, and story missions.

Solo grinding quests was horridly repetitive and boring, and should have been the last resort activity for when you absolutely could not find a group. But for some reason they made the rewards from soloing so good that nobody ever bothered grouping up. Both times I played the game (at release and when it went f2p) I lost interest after 40+ levels of grinding dull, pointless quests by myself.

TERA is worth trying for anyone who's an MMO fan. The combat system is genuinely fresh and unique and I'm still surprised it works as well as it does in the US. The rest of the game is let down by a too-fast leveling curve (which trivializes the crafting and named mobs/world bosses because you out-level it all too quickly) with a focus on boring solo grinding.
