After a reading a whole bunch about scanners I finally felt this one would suite my needs...

[*]USB 2 Connection (gotta be USB these days!)
[*]USB powered- convenient
[*]Low power LEDs avoid image problems that may affect high-power lighted units that can't get enough power from the USB cable
[*]LEDs don't need time to "warm up"
[*]LEDs won't burn out
[*]one-touch buttons for copying & faxing
[*]No complaints about software bugs or poor construction like i've seen on other models
[*]can scan sideways (if you're short of space I guess)
[*]if anyone can make a decent quality scanner, it ought to be Canon, right?
[*]THE PRICE ... ! The only cheaper ones I've seen are "iffy" models with mail in rebates

Did I mention I'm a fan of LEDs? I think my Okidata 6e laser printer is pretty slick. Anyways I thought I'd share, mine's on order :)

I have the previous model, and I love it...definitely go for it. It is very slim and sturdy, and works great and produces excellent scans.

Info on the model I have:

Canon N676U

Picture

You can also find my model of scanner for cheap on eBay, I got mine for $37 new.

I'm ready to order one, but will it work on my older usb 1.1 computer? I wouldn't think there would be a problem but a review on one of the google searches says

"Two new scanners from Canon offer 600dpi and 1200dpi scanning in a slim chassis that requires only a USB 2.0 connection to a PC for power and data transfer."

This scanner is powered through the usb port so perhaps it needs usb 2.0 for the power or somesuch?

I have this exact model and would recommend it to anyone looking for a good scanning solution. It's not the quickest one in the world, but the scans are very good, IMHO.

I am not sure about the USB 2.0 requirement, though :(

I got free shipping from dell.

USB 2 is backwards compatible with USB 1, just reduced transfer speeds.

Fry's has these LiDe scanners every once in a while on clearence for 29.99. Just have to look for them. It varies from store to store.

That said, these scanners are VERY nice... very small and compact. The perfect scanner for your notebook. Only downside is that they are a tad slow.

They are slow even though they are USB 2.0? (I have a Dell4550, so my motherboard supports 2.0)

Don't worry, they are a tad slow...which means just a bit...I wouldn't worry about it at all. The one I have (previous model, so yours may be faster if you opt for the one in this deal) is USB 1.1 and is powered by the USB cable...real slick.

Scans take a little bit, but really...how many times are you going to just sit down and NEED super speed for scanning? If you do...then you obviously wouldn't have a budget of $50 for a damn scanner lol. Buy a big badass $500 SCSI model or something in that case. :)

I use it with PhotoShop 7, works awesome. I have a Dell 4550 2.4ghz myself, and that is where I run my scanner (hmm...wonder why so many of us deal hounds have that model? :)).

I've had two Canon USB scanners (last one was N1220U). After about a year both started to scan a little crooked. I mailed one in to Canon but they didn't fix it (and they mailed it back with added dents while they were fixing it). Something these reviews can't tell because they test the scanner only right after they buy it. That doesnt mean it wasnt fixed in newer models or that other brands dont have the same problem.

On the plus side, great quality scans, looks nice, and small. Its slow because it is USB powered - the motors cant use a lot of power. It has little to do with the interface speed itself.

Personally, I'd go with the Staples Memorex/Atronix scanner for $15 AR. Its the same size and produces good quality pictures too (aside from the black background).

Great deal!! This is probably comparable to my Canon 670U which scans color photos absolutely fabulously. If the color reproduciton and brightness is the same on the Lide20 you can't go wrong.

The reviews should give you insight into how good 20 vs 30 is. As far as I can tell the only advantage to the 30 is higher resolution.

The Epson 1650 Photo Scanner is on sale at Fry's for $49 in SoCal this weekend. 1600x3200 DPI. Refurbished.

Anybody have experience with the Epson relative to the Canon? How are Epson refurbs?

I got my Lide 20 about a week ago, wow I had so many problems.. The thing just would not work but after screwing around with it for like an hour I got it to work, the scanner would try to get "configuration data" from the scanner and would always get an error.. I had it working briefly then I unplugged it and tried using it again a few days later and couldn't get it to work for anything. I believe I either had a defective scanner or ups played catch with it on the way here.. I got a Lide 30 from staples instead to see if it worked on my computer. It's been working flawlessly with no issues, just like you would expect.. so I believe the one I got from amazon had some kind of intermitant hardware issue.

Mine's been running well, no surprise there :) I don't use it enough to get all the settings right... for example, when I "copied" a document to my printer, the blue ink turned into light grey, instead of black like i'm used to on photocopiers... next time I'll set a b&w scanning mode.

Very nice. I've had a Canon "slim" scanner for a few years now. The footprint is very small, so it takes up very little desk space. Mine has never failed me. I really like mine.

I've got the LiDe 30 model, and just to get things straight, its usb 2 compatible, but its only a usb 1.1 device (speed-wise). it doesn't run any faster with a usb 2 port (actually, for me, it ran slower) . I think Canon is phasing these models out for actual usb 2 full speed devices.
