What are they going to put the fire out with? Their garden hoses???

Fighting fires requires proper equipment and training...These things are EXPENSIVE and COST money.

If they weren't willing to pay $75, do you really think they would have enough to pay for a fire truck? hoses? masks? suits? medical equipment? LOL

These home owners have elected officials that have decided that their county will not fund a fire department from their property taxes. The city nearby has offered to cover these home owners if they're are willing to pay $75/year.

This home owner after seeing a neighbor's house burn down b/c they didn't want to pay for fire coverage decided not to pay for it.

The only people to blame are these home owners. They decided to take the risk and got burned.

Once again, for the people who cannot seem to keep up....

These were residents who lived outside of the city limits. The fire department is funded by city taxes and will only respond to fires/emergencies within city limits.

The non-city residents VOTED not to fund a fire department and instead pay a $75 fee if they wanted the CITY fire department to respond to a fire on their property outside of the city limits.

This fire was outside of city limits and the homeowner did NOT pay the $75.

If my house was burning down I would attempt to use water to put the fire out. Even without proper training.

Well I guess the point is if the entire community showed up we are not alone in our fire just as they are not alone in theirs. I think im thinking about this on a different level then you.

You probably would be met with similar success as the family living near me that tried to dig their car out of Chicago's 2011 February thundersnow storm with a playskool sand castle shovel.

Somebody brought up the point about they should have put out the fire and billed them for it. Well I wanted to bring up something kind of similar here in Anchorage. The city is mandated and required to provide trash service to the community for a set amount. Guess what, we have "clients" that don't pay, but since we're required to offer service, they still get trash service but the minimum service we can offer and their past due amount just continues to grow. All we've been able to do is send them to collections where they sit and most don't care what it does to their credit.

Point is: like someone said earlier if they could get away with not paying the $75 and still get fire protection, what's the incentive for people to pay?

well snow only requires a proper shovel.

If they were buried under a mudslide I'd be the idiot if I showed up with a shovel until somebody showed up with a proper excavator.

Don't see too many neighbors with an excavator or a water truck and pump to deal with the larger calamities life throws at you. If there was a hydrant nearby and somebody happened to have a firehose and wrench/key to unlock the hydrant, you could have saved the house and worried about the fine afterwards for stealing water.

People are saying the fire department should put out fires because it's the moral thing to do, not because they're paid to do it.

Isn't it the moral thing to do to provide me with services such as fire and police even if I don't pay for them? Instead, if I don't pay my taxes which fund local services such as the fire department, I lose my home just as these fools did for not paying.

The outcome is the same. Don't pay for your services, lose your home. Nobody would feel sorry for someone who lost their home because they didn't pay their property taxes, but somehow these rednecks who lose their home because they choose not to pay $75/yr for fire coverage get sympathy from the useful idiots in this thread.

I am thinking about this a realistic point of view. What good does it do for the community to show but not have the tools and equipment to deal with problem?

Do you really think that you and your neighbors with their garden hoses can put a fire like this out? What if there was someone inside? Does one of your neighbors have a mask and fireman's uniform to go inside and rescue them?

Why don't you realize that it costs MONEY to do these things properly (especially if you want to reduce the chances of anyone else getting hurt)? This money needs to come from somewhere....

You probably think the neighboring city should pay for their groceries too, right? Doesn't everyone have a moral right to eat?

These people voted not to pay for their own fire service.

They also were too lazy to set up any kind of volunteer firefighting group.

A nearby city with smarter people who pay their taxes and aren't slacker leeches, out of the goodness of their hearts offered to share the firefighters they paid for, for a small annual fee of $75.

I'd agree that these morons should never have voted not to pay for firefighting services through taxes or the $75 fee, but it's their own stupid fault. They made their bed, they can watch it burn. Personal rights come with personal responsibility.

The county yokels were too cheap to pay the $75 but still want the services they refused to help fund.

What is wrong is that someone did not take the proper steps to protect their home and family, especially over $75.

Why don't you understand that things COST money....that is they way the world works...

I am sure in your little Candyland world where everyone has pet unicorns and fire engines grow on trees, the world is very nice place and nothing burns down. But here in the real world, a fire truck costs alot of money to obtain, maintain, insure and keep fueled and ready to go at all times...But you don't seem to care or realize that...
