A better indicator is not making a profit but what the curve of earnings says. Many CEO's are hired to fix other people's problems. So if the earning curve is on the way up but still negative it may take a few more quarters to turn it around and they may still deserve a bonus for increasing the worth of the stock from a poorer position. Take Alcoa (AA) for instance (Metals, Aluminum, Copper). They announced they had a loss but they are probably poised for future profits.
