It's all opinion so here's mine. Be sure to look at the 18V Ryobi combos at Home Depot. They have 5 piece kits with case and 2 batteries for $179 or 7 piece sets for $229. The small set has a 1/2 " screw drill, a circular saw, a sawzall, a flashlight, and a vacumn. The best part is replacement batteries are $40 for 2. One DeWalt battery costs $80 last I looked.

For the $500 you were going to spend, you could get you AND your dad a 5 piece set and still get change. If they are only for home use the tools (other than batteries) will probably outlast you.

The Ryobi ones at home despot are pretty good. I'd also consider getting a dremel, very useful.

I've been very satisfied with my cordless circular saw. It's strong enough to cut 2x4s, and that's enough for me.

You can get a corded circular saw for ~$40. A cordless circular saw is a lot less useful than a cordless drill.

FWIW, I like Craftsman's 19.2v drill. I used them in a previous job, and I own one myself. It's a great drill for a homeowner, costs $99 usually packaged with some bits or a flashlight or some junk. It's no DeWalt, but it's $100 less than their top of the line model for 50 less in-lbs of torque (400 vs 450).

I do have a ~$60 DeWalt corded drill, but it's not a drill/driver like my cordless craftsman:
- No torque adjustment
- It doesn't stop immediately when you let the trigger out - it slows to a stop

the 28V milwakies are a dream. seriously. the drill is insane its like having one with a cord. and if youre worrying about holesaws the 28V Lit ion battery is nice too.
