Tell me why or why not to buy a nice set of cordless tools.

I want to get my father a set of power tools for his birthday. This is a selfish gift because I want to use them when needed. For homeowners, how often do you use your tools and for what? Worth it? Should I even bother with cordless tools?

I'm eying a Milwaukee four pack with a 28v Sawzall, Circular Saw, HammerDrill and light.

Thanx

im thinking the same. the only times ive used a sawzall and a hammer drill are times where i wouldnt expect a battery to have gotten even half the job done at one go. meh to that.

but a good cordless drill is fantastic, my dad is fond of the one with the quick-exchange end where you can drill, pop the end off, and screw right away. quite handy.

This was my initial feeling. I currently work on a construction site and do not dabble in any cordless tools other than a 12v drill and an impact driver, but was thinking it might be worth it to just go for the other cordless tools if I'm investing in the battery, charger and drill already.

But will you ever use the other tools?

You might want to evaluate impact drivers, though.

28V for home is a big over kill...

stick with 14V or 18V

I am a Dewalt fanboy, so I would go with Dewalt...:)

The 28v kit I have my eye on is on sale for around $500 shipped so I figure, why not :), especially for use of the sawzall.

My 14V Dewalt handles a3" and 4" holesaws with no problem...B&D is not the same build as a Dewalt...

I dont agree, cordless tools are miles ahead of what they were even 2 years ago.
I recently picked up a Milwaukee 18v cordless set and have been really impressed with it for basic handy jobs. I cant even imagine how nice the 28v set the OP is looking at is, I bet it has outstanding battery life.

From the cordless saw I got at least 100 cross cuts through 2x4s without killing the battery.

I cut out a whole house full of bottom plates from doorways with the sawzall on 1 battery charge.

Cordless stuff has its place, and for everyday users the corded stuff is really needed, but for most week-end home improvement guys, the new cordless sets will do a great job.

Even guys that work for me will still have a cordless set in addition to the corded stuff for quickie jobs. By the time you get all your cords unrolled, you can be done using cordless tools. A lot of them even use cordless gun nailers for quick jobs instead of dragging out the compressor, hoses and cords for driving a few quick nails.

What was included in this kit you are talking about?

Alcohol and power tools don't mix.

For drills aqnd such I have Craftsmen. THey have their new 19.2v series in which the batteries are all interchangable so you can use them on all the items. There's probably 20 different tools you can choose from. THey have some in sets and some you can just buy separately.

I love mine. It replaced a Craftsmen 16.8v drill that I had for years but the charger finally went kaput.

I've been very satisfied with my cordless circular saw. It's strong enough to cut 2x4s, and that's enough for me.

unless you will be using it often like once a week or more its not worth it to buy cordless.
after a few years the batteries lose alot of capacity.

I had the black and decker 14v which I thought was just fine for home purposes. I burned up the drill trying to drill a 3'8" hole in concrete. Went to buy another one and ended up buying the ridgid 18v combo for $299 at home depot. I had no idea how crappy my b&d set was until I used the ridgid a few times. Took 3 seconds to drill the 3/8" hole that my b&d burned up while barely making a mark on the concrete.

But for everyweek use wouldn't a more durable corded tool be better?
Under this logic the cordless is never worth it.
