Tell me everything about CA. I'm thinking of moving there permanently.

San Diego rocks...although my favorite city in CA would be Pasadena. IMO, it's one of the classiest cities in California, if not the U.S.

I could not agree more. I live in Santa Cruz, CA now but I want to SOOOOO badly move back down to Pasadena 🙁. Thats where I'd like to spend the rest of my life.

BTW-Hope you have about $200k to put down on a house or you make bank or both if you have any hope of buying a house reasonably close to where you work.

With graduation coming up on May, I plan to move on with my life and discover a totally new environment. I've never been to CA and I have great interest in getting a job there. The beautiful weathers, palm trees, sunny skies.. I love them! (The closest I experienced to that was FL)

I guess it's better I ask questions in bullets:

1. Nor cal or So cal, which is better and how are they different?
2. How are the living expenses in LA, San Jose, Sacromento, & SF compared to Boston?
3. Which city would you recommend and why?
4. I hear the weather in Nor cal is similiar to Boston, nothing spectacular... tell me more about LA.
5. Job market job market job market

If anyone would like to chat with me on AIM, please let me know. I'm excited as hell.

1. Lived in SoCal all my life. No idea about NorCal, though you're going to get different opinions from everyone. It's a nice place to live, with some drawbacks.

2. Cost of living sucks ass in SoCal, especially if you want to live in a major city like SF or LA. I'd recommend living outside the city limits if you don't mind commuting.

3. San Diego area is a nice place to live. I lived in Santa Maria briefly when I was a kid but I've spent my whole life in San Diego and the surrounding areas. Everybody makes a big deal about the traffic being a bitch and I will agree that it CAN be a bitch sometimes, but it's certainly not 24/7 traffic, like someone else made it out to be.

4. L.A weather is pretty much the same as the rest of SoCal. Not a lot of rain, and mostly sunny days. It can get pretty damn cold inland and at the foot of the mountains where I live, though.

5. Good luck finding a job.

You mean SD or LA right? cuz you're talking about SoCal.

And people in San Diego CANNOT DRIVE.

Yeah, I'll give you the "People in San Diego cannot drive" thing. Jesus....

People in san diego can drive plenty fine, they are just assholes.

BTW:
Sharks > Mighty Ducks.
Raiders > -
49'ers (who are 1-9 mind you) > -

Dodgers and Angels had good years, i'm not too fanboy to admit that. We'll see this comming season if they do well again 🙂

there is a reason why SF/SJ/OAK bay are is considered the #2 sports area in the nation.

PSH, YOU BETTER PUT IT ON!!

I'm sorry, but whens the last time the Rose Bowl, the Rose Parade, the Emmys, the Daytime Emmys, the Grammys, the Oscars, and any other thing of that magnitude was in NO CAL?!

And I'm sorry but you know what? Recent history has proven :

Lakers > Sacramento Kings

Angels > Giants

Dodgers > Giants

Chargers > Raiders and 49ers COMBINED!!

And even though Arnold resides in Sacramento, he made his name in HOLLYWOOD

That's all meaningless stuff when it comes to quality of life. Unless of course you are so sports-centered that you break down and cry every time your favorite team loses. Anyway, I prefer the NorCal area myself. I'm from Stockton which is ~50 miles south of Sacramento. If it's nice living you're looking for don't go to Stockton. I'd suggest the suburbs of Sacramento, Roseville, Elk Grove, or if you want Galt.

Footnote about socal ...

When you think about socal you have to think about the glitz and glam of Los Angeles, but thats only part of SoCal. SoCal in my mind is broken into many parts. There's the Valley, West LA, Hollywood, South Bay, Long Beach, and South Central LA. This does not include Orange County, or San Bernidino County.

Valley = hot, far, sucks, living costs = $
West LA = traffic, UCLA, some culture, living costs = $$$$
Hollywood = fashion, "alternative lifestyle", clubs, living costs = $$$$
South Bay = beaches, engineering, beaches. living costs = $$$$$
Long Beach = huge city, ghetto and rich. living costs = $ - $$$$

make sure you get an idea of where you are going to move to, riverside != Los Angeles.

It's expensive, and many more businesses may be moving out since it looks like a health care measure may have passed....

I live in NorCal but, if I were to move down south I would go to Irvine, I liked it there.

Personally after living on the peninsula all my life and the south bay for a couple of years, I actually like the Dublin/Pleasanton/San Ramon area.

As for the Emmy's, Grammy's and stuff like that, how many of us would actually have the chance to go to one of those, probably very few, so who cares?

Boston weather ain't like N. Cal weather. LOL. What is that person smoking?

I lived east and west coasts.

Cal weather is unbeatable.

N. Cal is more relaxed with less traffic than S. Cal. Salaries are compensated for each locale. Housing is the only difficult thing to get in here. VERY expensive. But fret not, just save your money and move away with your earnings.

Job opportunities are most attractive in Silicon Valley (S. Bay/San Jose). They offer MUCH MORE generous stock options than anywhere in the country--by far! This aspect is very compelling (until FASB cahnges the law on stock option taxation on companies).

N. Cal is more diverse in terms of things to see and do: mountains/skiing/gambling in Tahoe, Yosemite, Napa, coastline like Monterrey, beaches in Santa Cruz, and San Fran which offers the best food this side of NYC and all other cultural stuff that goes with a big cosmopolitan city.

S. Cal is hotter in summer like Sacramento. The heat and smog can get nasty. San Diego and Orange County (Newport Beach, Laguna Beach) are awesome beach communities but super expensive with not many job opportunities like N. Cal or LA.

Sacramento is growing by leaps and bounds, It'll be a clone of LA. Big traffic. HOT in summer. Valley traps smog (not a problem yet but will be). BIG SPRAWL. It's the last bastion of a growing city in California where real estate is still relatively affordable. Jobs growth and tech companies moving in are very good.

Socal is where it's at. Warm, sunny and lots of opportunity Nocal is rainy and cold stay away. But you must live within 10 miles of coast or on the otherside of Cascades or you're breathing toxic fumes and can't see past a couple hundred yards. I grew up in Costa Mesa which was great. Beaches everywhere and skiing an hours drive at big bear/arrowhead.

The one thing SoCal has over NorCal is women. Everything else I preffer NorCal. It's better weather (more moderate), better air, better outdoors activities, better culture, better traffic, better jobs (for me) in NorCal. The problem is there are too many guys, esp in Silicon Valley. I guess Ideally, if you have the money and can find the job there, go to San Diego.
