I live in Glendale for 4 months now and there is not much going on here besides the Galleria Mall and Armenians. When I go out, it end up being Old Town Pasadena.

1. depending on your field of work. As an example, if you are a special effect engineer, Burbank, near LA is the choice.
2. If you include food, SF is probably as expensive as Boston. Followed by San Jose, LA and Sacramento.
3. Again, depending on your field. San Diego has the nicest weather overall. If you work in LA, Chino Hills, Diamond Bar, Walnut are nice towns to live.
4. Who BS you that the weather in Nor cal is similiar to Boston? That person must has frostbite in his/her posterior. LA West side is not so bad, Westwood is fun but you don't want to live in LA period due to its tax base. Nobody mentions about Orange County. Check it out (Laguna Niguel, Newport Beach, Irvine ...)

5. Again you need to tell us your prefered line of work so we can advise.

What are you talking about? Sacramento is nowhere near San Jose and the others.

Diamond bar is like in the middle of the traffic nightmares during rush hour. It is a nice town though.

I would say go to San Diego for the best. You got Mexico for all your illegal needs, better beaches and warmer weather (I hear you crazy people like that because I love the seattle/cold/dreary/wherever weather). If you want a nice community and less of a big town field, I'd say mid Cali around Monterey is really nice.

Otherwise, I'd stay away from Sac as people are moving here and the town just isn't ready to deal with all the people.

YOU LIVE IN DIAMOND BAR?!?!?!?

OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG!!! I WAS BORN THERE!!!! Too bad I had to move 3 years ago :/

Neighborhood behind the Ralphs, Blockbuster, and Bank of America on the corner of Diamond Bar Blvd. and Grand Ave.

DIAMOND BAR AND THE REST OF SO CAL PWNS NO CAL!

I guess it's better I ask questions in bullets:

1. Nor cal or So cal, which is better and how are they different?
2. How are the living expenses in LA, San Jose, Sacromento, & SF compared to Boston?
3. Which city would you recommend and why?
4. I hear the weather in Nor cal is similiar to Boston, nothing spectacular... tell me more about LA.

job market... which field are you in?

I'm from NorCal so I'm biased but fvck SoCal, all they do is steal our water. *puts on flamesuit*

SoCal doesn't rain a lot, but then California doesn't get a lot of rain in general. It never really gets too cold in the population centers (which I'm assuming you're looking for). Living expenses is very high in SF as far as I can tell but the suburbs are still OK. Sacramento is expanding really fast you might want to look into it.

PSH, YOU BETTER PUT IT ON!!

I'm sorry, but whens the last time the Rose Bowl, the Rose Parade, the Emmys, the Daytime Emmys, the Grammys, the Oscars, and any other thing of that magnitude was in NO CAL?!

And I'm sorry but you know what? Recent history has proven :

Lakers > Sacramento Kings

Angels > Giants

Dodgers > Giants

Chargers > Raiders and 49ers COMBINED!!

And even though Arnold resides in Sacramento, he made his name in HOLLYWOOD

All I keep hearing about SoCal is the traffic.

no. because people wind up moving further and further out to buy homes and just create more traffic going from their faraway affordable house to where their job is in the cities.

i would love to live in pasadena or burbank but to get to my job in hollywood i'd have an hour something commute.

Yeah, but the NHL is in lockdown, so it doesn't really count . . .

And seriously, which NBA team beat their northern rivals THREE times in a row to win the championship?

We need to play you guys more often; if we play you in the playoffs, we're guaranteed a championship 😛

the weather in LA might be better than norcal (if you like it hot) but the air is so incredibly bad and the people are so incredibly shallow and the traffic is so incredibly horrific that you will wish you were dead within 24 hours. i'm not kidding. on my last trip to LA, by the time i left i was sitting in my car, stuck in traffic (went 2 miles in 30 minutes, and there wasn't even an accident), literally screaming at the top of my lungs, "GOD, I'LL DO ANYTHING, JUST GET ME THE FVCK OUT OF LA!" It took me longer to get across the LA basin than it did to get from the other side to San Jose.

i've lived in orange county and it's clean and the air is better, but it's an antiseptic, soul-sucking, intolerance-breeding pit of doom. i'd tell you how i really feel but this is a family forum.

the bay area is a pretty nice place to live though. 😀

That might happen if the Kings move to...uh....somewhere in the East.

where i live in southern california, we have GREAT WEATHER

the beach is not far

in the summer, the highest we've ever hit was about 95 (which really isnt that hot . . . really)

in the winter, it only gets as cold as about 25 (at night)

the foothill mountains are not far away . . . right now, they are covered with snow (at least the upper parts)

and my dad can travel 35 miles or so to work in under an hour (yeah, really, and believe it or not, he works RIGHT NEXT to LAX)

I love California. That being said, I haven't lived in any other state. I lived in Boston for 3 weeks (LOL -- for business) and I liked how you're pretty mobile even without a car (same in NYC), and I enjoyed the cold weather for a while, but both got old.

If you're going to live in California, my preference is Southern California, Los Angeles County, around the South Bay Cities. It's absolutely gorgeous here and everything is practically 20 minutes away (by car, not including traffic 😉)

If you do consider the South Bay, a variety of jobs here are tech/engineering, marketing and entertainment-related. There're mostly engineering/space tech jobs nearby from Northrop Grumman, Aerospace, etc. Then there are the headquarters of Honda, Toyota and Mattel. There's also an Oracle and so on. Look for Manhattan Beach, CA; Hermosa Beach, CA; Redondo Beach, CA; El Segundo, CA; Torrance, CA city websites for more information on jobs/industries/living "conditions" 🙂

Best of luck!

I've only lived in the Los Angeles area (8 years), and have not lived in the SF Bay Area or Sacramento.

1. I can't really tell anyone what's better as it depends on the individual.

In SoCal, in terms of entertainment, there is plenty to do. As someone mentioned previously, there are lots of movie theatres, shopping centers, clubs, concerts, etc. The beach, mountains and even the desert can be accessible in an hour's drive. There are good museums and art galleries here, but I thought Northern California had a larger variety. I feel that because of the entire entertainment industry with its glitz, glamour and celebrity, many of the things to do here, revolve around that. But with the size of this area, you're bound to find something you like to do.

4. I don't really have anything else to add to what other people have said about the climate here. It's fairly dry for the most part, unless we have El Nino.

5. Based on what I've seen, things have been improving a bit, especially here in southern California with its diverse kinds of business. I don't know what kind of employment you're looking for, but some areas will be much more competitive than others, especially tech. Plus, you'll have to compete with many qualified graduates from all the great universities here.

Good luck!

um norcal has malls too. dont have the uber popular theme parks, but we do have some - marine world and great america being the big ones in the bay area.

no city life in norcal? hahahaha. San Fran is as "city" as it gets. if you ask me, socal has no city life at all. perfect weather if you like sun 300 days a year. norcal, especially the bay area has much more variation, and summers are nicer, rarely breaking 90 in san jose and usually in the low 80s.

norcal weather is nothing like boston. we dont get the bitter cold winters, nor the high humidity that makes for hot summers.

Amol missed one thing in his sports comparison: Sharks > Kings + Ducks.

Yeah, and WHAT current league, may I ask, is in a lockout stage? I'm sorry, not a lot of people follow that sport . . .

Plus, we got TV and Hollywood stars in our backyard 😀

LA has hosted 2 olympics . . .

SF hasn't . . .

all of california - housing extremely expensive - prices go up >$1000/week recently.

norcal (bay area) - traffic bad, mild weather, job market ok.

socal - polluted beyond belief, traffic horrible, HOT in summer.

central california - HOT, polluted, mostly low wages & few high-tech jobs.

sacramento - HOT, crowded, traffic bad, job market ok.

rural areas - few jobs, unless you're into making methamphetamine, lots of poverty.

Living in Sacramento, I like how it's sunny out right now after biking to work in freezing weather this morning. NorCal has a slower pace of life than SoCal, which I prefer, and there is so much to do in SF. I'd like to move to San Jose or Fremont area, but COL is much higher than Sac. In comparison, brand new houses cost >$350-$400K in Sac for entry-level 2bd house. We recently bought a condo for $225K and thought that was a steal. A major employer if you're in the Sac area is the state gov't, which isn't doing much hiring right now with the current budget. Maybe in a few years or so.

It was 36 degrees here this morning...That's unusual though for San Diego.

Edit-I've lived here since 1990 when I moved here from upstate NY. I'm never going back! 😛
