I reinstalled Windows 7 today and was watching the updates like a hawk to ensure none of those viruses slip in. Sometimes even if you hide them they may re-appear so please be careful.
 
They aren't viruses. I understand you don't like certain updates or whatever and I totally understand that, but calling them viruses is not at all accurate.

to me they are, a virus steals data, deletes files, sends keystrokes to some server..........this is no different, but in a legit way.......

just my 2 cents
 
Something funny happened to me this morning, I got a phone call from a toll free number saying my full name claiming it was on the behalf of my bank and the first question was that if I was a smoker or non-smoker and I hung up, banks don't care about that shit... So I called my bank and they said there was no record of them calling me and the only thing I can think of is when I accessed my bank online via my laptop last week to check my CC balance because I needed it which had a fresh install of Win 10 (I haven't really done much with it since I installed it), I normally access my bank via my Linux boot.

Could be a coincident.

When were these released? I'm starting to wonder if I accidentally let some of these through. I've gotten used to Linux where I just say yes to everything and was doing that in windows too for a while. If MS is smart they probably made it so that even if you uninstall these they stay. Spyware is usually not designed to be easy to remove.

Huh? You're suggesting these updates delete files (you should report that to Microsoft!), steal your personal data (that would be a pretty serious issue and I'm relatively sure security people have been looking at the telemetry sent...and I doubt it's sending info saying you've got porn.exe on your C: drive) and sending keystrokes? Again...I don't think the telemetry is doing this...

Use accelerators? MS is getting your data:
Accelerators. When you click on or move your mouse over an Accelerator in Internet Explorer, any of the following may be sent to the service provider:

People are screaming about how Windows 10 is a service, and a not product paid for. Well guess what. Neither is Windows 7:

SCOPE OF LICENSE. The software is licensed, not sold. This agreement only gives you some rights to use the features included in the software edition you licensed. Microsoft reserves all other rights. Unless applicable law gives you more rights despite this limitation, you may use the software only as expressly permitted in this agreement. You people need to chill the hell out. Is it atrocious that MS has opted you IN automatically instad of opted you out? ABSOLUTELY. But quit whining about stealing your data. You let them do it in Windows 7, whats your problem with Windows 10?

Thankfully, just like in Windows 7, we can LIMIT what kind of data and how much in Windows 10.

Fact is, there is no evidence or proof of MS keylogging you, deleting your files, stealing your files, nothing. And as pointed out before, what would MS have to gain by doing any of these things, aside from lawsuits by people and/or other large companies?
 
Remember crappy Windows XP updates we were getting just year before XP support expired? Expect more of these. I agree with all. At this point you'd want only security updates and nothing else.
The Windows 7 is on extended support, so they won't be adding new features for users .... only ones that benefit Microsoft.
 
blackangst1, everything you quotes applies to "the software" which is Microsoft Windows and the software that comes with it (IE, Media Player, etc). I think everybody who is concerned here already knows to say no to the Accelerators, uncheck the lookup options in Media Player, and the data that MSE allows control over sending (which is generally the same as all other AV collects, I might add). This post is very similar to others getting all worked up over the Services section of the Windows 10 EULA, without taking the time to actually read what that term was referring to.

This thread is about the optional updates which do collect data, and I appreciate berryracer putting them all in a nice little list for us.

I get that, ketchup. But my point is the same. No where have I seen that Windows 10 will, for example, detect pirated game for example, that are anything but MS games. Which they have every right to do. Its their property. Sure, the language suggests they will be more agressive about it in 10, but so what? My point that MS was stealing your data in Windows 7 remains. All of this stuff about OMG Microsoft is spying on me and stealing all my stuff is nothing but FUD. Its been happening for years but not nearly to the extent many people are saying.

edit: I was right. MS's stance on detection of pirated software applies only to MS products. HERE it is in writing in the service agreement.

I agree. MS offers options for sharing information right there in the GUI. So, instead of looking at it and saying "no thank you," some people go off on the stealing info tyrade. I have a thread around here somewhere about going through the gui and finding these options. They are not super-hidden.

Look, I take my privacy seriously (which is why I stoutly refuse to use cloud storage for anything personal), but I also don't pretend that everyone is out to get me. What does MS have that personally identifies my PC and links it to me? I guess if they check the IP (which is pretty public already) and cross reference that with the address to find out the property owner (which again is public info), they could. But then, so can anybody. But why would MS care? And again I ask, to what benefit is there to MS to get into my data on my system? And again, is there any evidence of MS ever doing this at any time?

They aren't hiding what the various telemetry settings do. They make it very clear what the different modes are, and very clear that if you have telemetry set to Enhanced there is a possibility of them getting sent a portion of a personal document you were currently writing that was loaded in memory sent to them in the event of a system crash. If they were planning nefarious schemes do you really think they'd tell you what's going on?

I'm cautious, I don't put my private info on the internet, but I'm not paranoid and wearing a tin foil hat.

By the way, I ran the Windows 10 upgrade 5 days ago, not 2 😛

So you're one of those who only uses throwaway phones, lives cash only, works under the table, only uses public Wi-Fi or internet cafes, and don't have any utilities in your name. That's fine, if that's what you want. Most of us do normal things like work under a W2, use credit cards, own a home, and pay our utilities in our names. If someone really really wanted to, they could get FAR more personal info from me under public records then Microsoft will using Windows.

To each their own 🙂

Can you do a similar dissection of the EULA for Windows 98se? It's the only MS OS I have (not connected to the internet). I don't "love" it, just keep re-adding it on triple-boot for the heck of it because I have the key and for the lolz.

Yeah it amazes me that most people are not concerned about their privacy. People just say "I have nothing to hide". This just encourages governments and companies into doing this stuff more as they figure there's not enough people that will try to make a fuss about it. I wonder if those people have curtains in their house windows and put clothes on when they go in public. If they do, I guess they must have something to hide.

To me, it's just the principle of it, they have zero business with any of my data or knowing what I'm doing. Absolutely none. Everyone seems to want to spy on us everywhere we go now, it's a horrible trend. Government, companies, etc. We need to fight this, we can't just sit down and accept it, because it will only get worse and all that data WILL eventually be used against you. People are freaking out about the Ashley Madison hack. Big freaking deal, you have to actually sign up to that and give it some data, and if you don't want people to know you're cheating, well, don't cheat in first place. But with all this stuff where companies and governments are collecting data about everything you do, there's no opt out of that and there's bound to be stuff you don't want people to see.
