I wonder how much of a luxury tax the yankees are going to have to pay?

Stupid.

And neither the Indians nor the Giants will do anything worth watching this year most likely. How unfortunate.

What a joke.

why? What difference does it make? The Angels won 100 games with Tex and lost in the first round of the playoffs. The yankees haven't done shit with the highest paid player in baseball (Arod) either

My prediction:

C.C. goes on the DL early in June
A.J. is decent
Tex does what he usually does
Yankees win wild card
Yankees lose in first round of playoffs again.

When the Rays, Diamondbacks, Cardinals, Rockies, Astros, and Marlins can still make it to the World Series - and win - there's very little argument for initiating a salary cap for baseball.

I don't see why people get so uppity over the Yankees making these big signings.

Exactly. They can spend as much as they want and still get destroyed in the first round (although they are at least now getting smart and buying pitching instead of a million juiced up 40hr hitters.)

I'm looking forward to reduction in athlete's pay in the coming years. It's coming. The economy will guarantee it. Meanwhile, congrats to Tex. He's definitely not worth it but if the Yanks wants to pay, good for him.

Not as much as you think. Teams get to count the some of the costs of their new stadiums against their team payroll when figuring the luxury tax. And the new Yankee Stadium costs a bundle.

Yep, they won't be paying squat in luxury tax next year. I fucking hate the yankees...

It's not my business to say but I think paying sport stars rediculous amounts of money for something that is pure entertainment on a consumer standpoint is just stupid. Hundreds of thousands? Maybe. Millions for 3 hours worth of entertainment...never.

Uhh, then don't watch games....? They get their money from the fans, its not like they get government aid for it.

And "3 hours of entertainment", when did they switch to a 1 game season?

More people will agree with you as unemployment goes into double digits and maybe even hit 20% in the future. There will be social unrest and backlash and athletes and teams will start to fill the heat for these ridiculous contracts.

unless you count billions for stadiums and just about the entire football and basketball minor league system. baseball at least has its own minor league.

And how much do they pay back in taxes? How much revenue do college programs make from bball/football?

Bubble implies artificial growth on false expectations and speculation.

Sports salaries are determined by various factors - none of which are grounded in speculation.

If attendance slows down, advertisers start to pull out, and merchandising revenue plummets - the teams (and the league) will pull in less cash, and in turn have less to spend on player salaries. That doesn't mean it's a bubble - it just means the economy is bad.

I won't go so far as to say sports are recession-proof - but when times are tough, things like sports, TV, and movies are generally used as a pleasant distraction rather than being eliminated altogether.

Players are paid market value. When millions of people want to sit and watch someone write software, software people will be making the same amount.
