And how much do they pay back in taxes?
not that much or else they wouldn't be threatening to leave/demanding stadiums anyway. people would still purchase entertainment so i doubt the sales tax boost from game day expenditures provide that much more revenue.

How much revenue do college programs make from bball/football?
basketball isn't a revenue sport, and most college athletics departments lose money.

Then why would a city/state give in? Whats the point if they don't get any money from them, right?

And I'm talking about the taxes that 20 million/year players pay, not just the teams.

I guessing that the Yankees are going to rescind their request for $300+ million from NYC to finish the new stadium since they've just spent 1/2 billion dollars in the last couple of weeks.

fwiw - Boston offered $170 million over 8 years. Boras players go to the highest bidder.

Ugh, that's sickening. Too bad they still won't get into the playoffs. Chocolate cupcake will bomb in 09, Tex will injured himself in the 1st month and be out for the season, Burnett will be avg.

Out of left field. The Yankees just swooped in!

nah...eveyone had a feeling NY was not talking about it, but they were indeed the leading team. The fact that he turned down pretty much the same offer from the sox told everyone that he was a yankee. He was just using the yankees at first to get the sox to pay that 200 million dollar contract so the yankees would pay more. When he saw the sox saw what he was doing (and the sox wanted no part of a bidding war), he just said, " fvck it, the yanks are the only one who will give me this cash".

FWIW boston offered 8 years at 180+ mill

Huh? I heard 8 yrs 170

They already paid it, and are exempt from it for the next 3 years due to having a new stadium.

It will be hilarious when they fail to make the playoffs again.

it'll be even funnier when T and A-Rod go back to back 2-20 in the playoffs as they get knocked out in teh first round again.

And if that doesn't happen, you'll cry about buying a championship. Ho hum.

They are going to end up getting Manny too. Seems like a lot of panic moves to me, but should be interesting to watch.

"He's a great fit for the Yankees. I really thought before they signed him that their offense was short last year, having gone from almost 1,000 runs a game to fewer than 800, and they added a big bat in the prime of his career."

The Yanks are gonna be hard to beat if they score 1,000 runs a game! Aiiieeeeeeee!!!

I'm a diehard Yankees fan, and I find it troubling when the Yankees do this kind of thing, it takes away from the sport. The greatness of sports is playing competitively, not outspending everyone else. That said, the Yankees would be stupid not to sign these huge free agent contracts within the current guidelines of the game. If they don't, someone else will. They should not be hesitant to make the move because they are willing to spend more than other teams. I also find it slightly amusing how all the Sox fans gloated after '04 and other fans after this past season how you see that you can't buy championships, it's all bout heart, not payroll. Maybe. But those same people are now complaining how the Yankees are buying a championship again.

Truth be told, the Yankees put enormous pressure on themselves to win. If they win the WS now, nobody will be impressed, if they dont win, everyone will be laughing. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

As a Yankee fan, there will never be another 1996. That team won with grit, guts and heart and were not free agents with insane contracts. Kinda like the NY Giants last year. they overcame adversity and won when they needed to with mostly unheralded players. This team does not have the ability to generate that kind of excitement.

Despite Texeira the Yankees still have big problems.
They don't have a catcher who can hit because Posada is probably finished behind the plate. They have an aging centerfielder in Johnny Damon who can't run like he used to and could never throw. They still haven't signed Matsui for left field, and he is showing signs of age and loss of speed, and is an average player.
Their shortstop Jeter has lost all his speed and probably covers the least ground of any starting shortstop in the A.L. And their second baseman Cano vanishes for long stretches every year.
So, I think the Yankees still have a long way to go before anyone crowns them champs.
