When I worked for a web hosting company, we have full access to customer's email accounts. We could read and delete messages at our leasure if we knew the email address and all we would have to do is look up the password. But, the odds of finding such material would be near impossible.

This is a very ugly situation, no matter which way it goes something bad happens.
We really don't need to set a precedent that it's OK for minors to create and distribute child porn.
On the other hand smacking these two sucks, but which is the greater evil?

He is definitely giving adults waayyy too much credit. I don't personally think what the teenagers did was very smart, as any relationship can end badly.
I consider my personal email address a private address (irregardless of what spammers may think) and I reasonably expect that if I send an email to someone's private email address, that no one but the recipient will view the contents. I think the mailbox analogy works well here. If I address a letter to someone, I expect the recipient will be the one to view the contents and then will determine if the contents should be shared or kept private. Now the postmaster, postal workers, others at the destination residence, etc. could open the letter and invade the recipient's privacy. I suppose the main difference is that there are laws in place to deter anyone besides the intended recipient from opening postal mail.
If they wish to have it setup like so they can, although having actual people to monitor everything would cost a lot of money, legally I'm not sure how it works. The Feds however to monitor internet traffic quite a bit. Email accounts generally have little to no security on them, IT people at the ISP can most likely view whatever they want for email unless you're using PGP encryption or something like that to keep it from prying eyes.

(Note: While this is sarcasm, it would be fully legal in my state for me to have sex with a 16 year old, but illegal to have pictures of it, which I still don't quite get).

Without question damning these two kids is the greater evil. The difference here is "distribute" and the intent therein. These kids only intended on distributing to each other. Making it a private matter. Someone trying to profit or whatever would make obvious efforts to distribute to a public audience with the intent of doing so.

Probably. Otherwise people could say, oops, my lost pictures were found by a distributor who then lost $10,000 which I then found.
