CONCORD -- Police say three teenage boys have been released into their parents' custody after being arrested in the strangling of two chickens at a Concord elementary school.
The boys, two 15-year-olds and a 14-year-old, all from Concord, were arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of burglary and animal cruelty. A school resource officer at El Monte Elementary School allegedly developed evidence of their involvement.
Police say Linny, a Rhode Island Red chicken, and Maxine, an Ameraucana chicken, were killed late Nov. 23 or early Nov. 24 after the suspects forced open a door to their chicken coop. The school was closed for the Thanksgiving holiday.
Concord police Lt. David Hughes described the killings as a random, spontaneous act.
Four other chickens were unharmed.
