Yeah, it bothers me that parents can drive their kids away for good. The mother that made her kid hold that sign - it strikes me as the kind of behavior that can permanently piss off a kid against his parents. I'm sure my Dad thinks he's the greatest father alive and everything he did was for his son's best. I'm sure he feels like a total winner. I'm sure he pats himself on the back for the wonderful job that he did. I'm sure he loves lying to everyone why his first-born won't ever see his face.

As for why my brother left, it's long & complicated and has a lifetime worth of detail behind it. Just don't embarrass and humiliate your kids and make a public spectacle of their failings, that is what I have said in this thread. It's something I can relate to in the case of my brother and my Dad.

Obviously, I need to have a doctorate in Child Psychology or raise a kid of my own for my opinion to have any worth here. I guess my personal experiences don't mean shit so why bother, eh?

Your personal experiences mean nothing because the situation is not the same. Logically, it's like saying:

A = C

Therefore:
B = C

I don't get the impression that you dad made your brother hold a sign saying what an idiot he was after he was, in fact, an idiot, therefore your analysis saying that the kid is going to be screwed up is just a way for you to condemn actions through projection.

So no, your personal experiences don't mean shit because in the case of psychology too many things are situational and it's not always what's on the surface that causes the problem, not to mention that you know NOTHING about the relationship between the parents and the child here.

How many people here have confessed to driving 107 in a 55?

I've driven 115 in a 55. I had to make sure the rev limiter was working.

But I did this on a country road - no houses, no traffic, no nothing. Stragiht as an arrow for miles and miles.

This just in... Publicly embarrassing your children is now considered good parenting...

especially here on ATOT

Oh, you're right. I suppose a three-minute time out would be an appropriate response to 107 in a 55. :roll:

Public humiliation is something that is out of vogue in the US, but it's very effective and underused. He put the public at risk driving that fast - he could have killed someone. As a society, we're moving farther and farther from a 'village' mentality toward a very selfish outlook, and I don't think that's a good thing.

Calm down there sport I didn't say he didn't deserve punishment, just that the ATOT crowd is always amusing to read on the subject of parenting.

My feelings exactly...

Personally, I would have never been doing 107 in a 55, because I know if I was caught I would have gotten my ass handed to me... Not to mention the fact that by the time I had raised the $5000 dollars need to buy a car as well as the $800 or so that insurance cost me... I had learned not to drive like an idiot...

I am only 22 so that "back in the day kids were raised different argument is bull"

And sorry.. but psychological abuse just leads to fucked up kids who end up shooting up their class because now they are being horribly picked on...

Yeah ... my parents told me I was a fucking idiot a couple times when I did stupid things... and when I showed up saturday morning hungover from a bush party they made sure to get me out and do horrible lawn work with a even worse hangover...

But this stuff... it is all clownshoes... your not teaching a kid anything by making him do embarrassing things other than making them hate you... This is just like those people who busted their own kids party...

What does a police record do for a teenager?? Fuck up their life? make them hate your guts? keep them out of the college or school they are looking for? End them up in a dead end job with an alcohol problem?

Now instead what if the parents would have came home... took all the booze, called everyones parents and let the hammer fall that way?

Too many posters are just into this oh man they totally pwned their kids... lol........ super lolz... I wasn't invited to parties in high school, this is awesome!

Just because it is a great owning doesn't make it good parenting.

I hope you never have kids, because you don't know one fucking thing about raising one properly.

The Parents should stand outside of the school and hold a sign that says.

I was STUPID for giving my son a car that can do 110mph. THANK GOD he was caught! He is too immature to drive something like that and probably would have killed someone.

When will people learn that high schoolers need to be driving Geos?

How many cars CAN'T hit 110 mph? That's a stupid argument, my friend got a 94 Geo Prizm given to him as a graduation present, he "tested the rev limiter", it hit 115 MPH.

Once I hit 88 MPH, weird shit starts happening.

Is the steering wheel supposed to shake like that? Why can I hear the bolts in my door coming loose? God I loved my HS car...

speeding is not STREET RACING!

It's the morons that just spout off on things they don't understand like cars/speed, gun control and DUI/DWI to make them feel safe at the expense of locking down the freedoms of others.

On an open road with the proper car speeds of over 100 mph are pretty uneventful.

The issues of street racing have to do with clocking over 100mph on a CITY street usually crossing at least one intersection usually more.
