Mr. Stevens survived another plane crash that killed five of seven people on board, including his wife, Ann, on Dec. 4, 1978. He was traveling on a Lear jet that crashed when landing at Anchorage International Airport.
Whoa!

Mr. Stevens, 86, was flying to a fishing lodge near Lake Aleknagik, according to The Anchorage Daily News. The N.T.S.B. said that the crash was about 10 miles northwest of Lake Aleknagik, and the aircraft was a DeHavilland DHC-3T.

The single-engine, high-wing airplane plane is owned by GCI, the Alaskan telecommunications provider, as is the lodge.

Well isn't that nice.

He lived a long life and didn't suffer at least. May he rest in peace.

Guess it goes without saying that he was not wearing the Hulk tie when this went down, otherwise we wouldn't be having this discussion.

It appears that our goverment has turned into nothing but a "good ole boy" club at all levels. The term "thicker then thieves' comes to mind.

"Before that 1978 crash, Mr. Stevens reportedly spoke of a premonition that he would die in a plane crash, a fate that is not unknown to many in Alaska who travel the vast state in small planes. "

Huh? Steven's is a former Senator, and O'Keefe is a former NASA administrator. Key word is former.

- joke about stevens
- forum conservatives claim liberals insensitive
- liberals point out where conservatives joked about some liberal dead guy
- rinse, repeat

For the record, Senator Stevens, do you object to jokes made about you on ATPN?

Thanks for clearing that up.

So do you suppose GCI will fly me to their lodge for a fishing trip?

I won't hold my breath waiting for their call. :p

I started receiving phonecalls on my answering machine from Fox & Cbs news this morning saying they'd heard that I was friends with Ted Stevens and asking me if I wanted to talk about the plane crash. I thought it was just another political gag when My cousin came over this morning and told me that Ted and Sean O'Keefe had been in a plane crash. That was really bizarre.
Senator has died BTW.
Must have pulled my name off a list somewhere.
By the way I'm from the bridge to nowhere town.

Were you for or against the bridge?

He's retired. He's NOT a Senator.

No shit? Did you read the article I posted and find that out??

GCI is the largest cable and telephone company in Alaska. It could not be determined if any GCI executives were aboard the flight. GCI representatives could not be reached by phone Tuesday afternoon.

The former chairman and ranking member of the Senate Commerce Committee, Stevens had been a key figure in digital-TV-transition legislation, the network-neutrality debate, and the push for the Federal Communications Commission's crackdown on indecency.

He was forced out of his chairmanship, and ultimately lost his bid for reelection, after his conviction for failing to report on disclosure forms work done on his house by an oil services company with business before the committee that he once chaired.

What was he doing now, just fishing or was he also using his contacts for lobbying? Was he paying for this vacation or was it a freebie?

A much simpler less expensive bridge would've have been just fine.

Fine for whom? More vessels come through this little town that through San Fransisco Bay. A low bridge would have caused a great many ships to divert their course by 20 miles including 700 cruise-liners carrying 1,000,000 passengers.

No....with the unique situation/placement it was an all or nothing deal.
