Ted Cruz would want to abolish the IRS.

Why do you even have to ask this question? Drastically scale back our military and social service spending and we all of a sudden don't need FIT at all.
We could go back to funding the federal government using import tariffs I suppose. All those companies that sent production overseas would be in a pucker.

What does the IRS even do anymore today?

Harass law abiding tax payers by hiding behind a concrete wall of bureaucracy and incompetence until their prey gives up or hires a lawyer. That's my experience, anyway.

I never believed what I thought was pure hyperbole by others until my wife and I went through it firsthand. It was absolutely mind boggling, stunning, flabbergasting, you name it. It takes blood, sweat, and tears to be as mindnumblingly stupid as that organization is. And truckloads of paint chips catered in for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Abolishing the IRS is not the same as not collecting taxes. The two are mutually exclusive. With a simple, transparent tax system designed solely to collect revenue and not to influence politicians social wet dreams a huge regulatory agency is not necessary.

Because inherently love paying taxes so much you won't need an enforcement agency?

You can simplify the tax code and change how taxes are paid but at some point someone is going to have actually send the money to the government and the government is going to have to some enforcement mechanism in place since sure as the sun rises someone will look for ways to get out of paying taxes.

You don't need nearly as much enforcement if it's a tax as you go scheme.

Kind of like paying sales tax. You pay it when the money changes hands.

Not a perfect setup; but a far cry from the honor system of the current income tax system.

I agree, but its fantasy to say "abolish the IRS" there will always need to be some agency similar in function regardless of how simple and transparent the tax scheme is. States have divisions in their revenue departments dedicated to ensure sales is collected and most importantly forwarded to the state.

It's only an honor system for the Rich, many of whom apparently have no honor. Working stiffs almost always pay. Anybody who ever received a paycheck knows that.

Here's a tax scheme that the financial elite hates desperately-

They much prefer regressive sales taxes.

Ted's just stroking their erroneous zones, gettin' 'em all hot & bothered. That's all Repub politicians.

Well, Rick Perry wanted to abolish the Commerce Department, Education Department and, uh...another one.

That's an awesome idea that will never happen due to two words - Wall Street.

"Abolish the IRS" is the same argument as abolishing Congress and replacing it with "Parliament" that functions identically to the evil system you just removed. You have to have an agency for collecting taxes from citizens and organizations; renaming it is mindless pandering.

Were we expecting any less?

It's Ted Cruz, he's around to bark ultra right and either lose the nomination or get laughed out of the general. Enjoy the show!

Didn't read the article. What does he propose would take its place?

No point to reading the article. It doesn't say anything about abolishing the IRS, just that he wants to. No proposals etc.

As has been noted, the IRS can not actually be abolished; substantially changed perhaps.

Even without income tax there are a bunch of other taxes the IRS collects: E.g., FICA and the federal gas and other use taxes.

Of course there are no proposals. It's the right wing political equivalent of dry humping.

Ted Cruz IS NOT NEWS.
Anything he says IS NOT NEWS.

Its terribly unjustly sad that the media will now pretend everything Ted Cruz says or does matters. AT ALL.

No doubt all the TV news talk shows will run Cruz as their main topic for discussion while fact is NO ONE CARES and IT DOESN'T MATTER.
AT ALL.
