That's sad.

However I said RMAing a lapped CPU would be hilarious to see the outcome. Do they just deny the request because it's obvious?

I'm pretty sure they want you to remove the cooler and cpu and pack them up and send for testing. This is after they have exhausted all other resources via phone support first. (assuming when you call you are reporting an issue where the system actually turns on and is not completely dead.)

nope

Intel doesn't want the cooler

in fact - the last time i RMA'd to intel it was a PIII 600, they send me one with the 'wrong' FSB

when i complained they overnighted me the right one

. . . and they did not want the other one back - their error shipping a $200 CPU - even though it was brand new and unopened by me

i dunno, the bag of screws was pretty funny; and the way they took a mini-hacksaw to a video card and THEN wanted a RMA was .. about the same level of humor, i would say

he said they didn't ask him to send the CHIP back not the heatsink... they shipped him the wrong CPU (different socket) and didn't want it back, instead overnighting him a correct CPU replacement.

Speaking of never knowing... the texas legislature never knows if you REALLY intend to use that vibrating plastic cylinder as a "Sex education aid" (because SELLING it for other uses is illegal in texas)

What vibrating cylinder? Is it something for a hard drive .. or an STD
.. or is it SSD ?

Yes, intel *ignored* my requests to send their mistakenly shipped CPU back to them
- they replied to my email and just ignored the request to send it back

Of course, it was a mess they made of my RMA originally; but that was kinda weird :p

At ANY rate , they did not want my CPU cooler - ever - just the CPU sent to them for the RMA

neither are thieves, it is entirely YOUR choice to buy something they spend a lot of money and time and effort and RISK producing. If you don't want it, don't buy it. It is not even anything essential, it is a luxury upgrade for those willing to pay for it.

Okey so i figure we get back on track.

How does intel know you overclocked? They dont.

So how do they enforce it? Its called stock heat sink. :p

Changing your afteer market sink to even something better voids your warrenty.

And the problem is to truely overclock you need a better sink.

To RMA you need your stock sink. And no it cant be brand spanking new.

And i thought EOL means no more support.

It makes sense. Intel would expect you to use the stock HSF, unless you are o/cing of course, which would usually mean that you would use an aftermarket HSF instead (a bit of a give away).

So if you have to RMA your dead CPU, break out that nice shiny un-used Intel stock HSF, dunk the HSF in your vacuum cleaner bag, so its nice and dusty, and make sure you leave a bit of Intel TIM residue on the bottom and they will be none the wiser.

What if you wanted to use an aftermarket HSF because it was quieter than stock?

Yeah, two AMD FX57's, broken pins. They said send them in even though I said they were lapped. They didn't ask for the coolers. They denied the RMA though.

And AMD also aren't thieves charging 1000 bucks for a processor thats multiplier isn't locked.

I see your join date is 2002 so you most certainly should be aware of your CPU price history. Care to let us know what AMD's X2 prices were in the timeframe since your joindate, say circa 2004?
