Teach me about betting on horse racing.

I'm headed to the Preakness Stakes on Saturday and have no idea what/how to bet. Educate me please.

I bet small amounts on horses with silly-sounding names. Plus, I drink a lot. I win every time because I get to holler, have fun, and trash talk with my friends.

yeah dont do it, one of friends is serious debt because of his gambling. in US dollars its around 22k

my other friend swears by a system he uses. he says you need a fair few computers to really rake in the dough. he claims its all to do with golden ratio..

he says he banned from all the major betting shops in the UK.

my advice, dont get involved.

Here's a few starters. Go to www.drf.com and you can learn there.

WIN bet - you collect only if your horse comes in first
PLACE bet - you collect if your horse comes in 1st or 2nd
SHOW bet - you collect if your horse comes in 1, 2, or 3rd

A fun/easy bet is an ACROSS THE BOARD. This is essentially 3 bets - a WIN, a PLACE and a SHOW. All three bets pay if your horse comes in first. 10 dollars across the board is a 30 dollar bet that can pay 300 bucks or much much more depending on the odds of your horse.

EXOTICS
EXACTA - pick the 1st and second horse in the race, in order. a BOX is essentially two exacta bets but the horses are reversed
TRIFECTA - pick the 1, 2, 3rd horse in the race, in order. a BOX is essentially 6 trifecta bets but the horses cover every combination of 1st, 2, 3rd.
SUPERFECTA - pick 1, 2, 3, 4th horse in the race. BOX is essentially 12 different bets with all combinations of those 4 horses.

That should get your started. The daily racing form will have TONs of info for you. There's other more complicated bets, but that will get you started. A tip for that race - big brown is going to take all the money in the betting pools so maybe have some bets without him to try to win some real money, but you can't leave him out of a good portion of your bets

An across the board bet on one or two horses with good odds is nice
A 3 way exacta box (6 times bet) is a decent way to make some money
Trifectas can pay anywhere from 500 to 5000+ on a two dollar bet

box your bets.

read about it. i cant remember exactly how they work. its easy to do though.

i think if you box win, place, show (1st, 2nd, 3rd) any combination (or just one horse you had in W/P/S) will win you something, even if its just your 2.00 bet back...

It's a good idea to box exotics until you get a little more advanced with your wagering and do wheel and part wheel exotic bets.

HOW TO PLACE WAGER on NEXT race
Amount, wager type, horse number
2 dollar, exacta box, on 3 and 4

OFFICIAL HOW TO PLACE WAGER:
Track, race number, amount, wager type, horse number
Pimlico, 8th race, 2 dollar, exacta box, on 3 and 4.

Boxing exotics
2 dollar exacta box on two horses = 4 bucks
2 dollar exacta box on 3 horses = 12 bucks
2 dollar trifecat box on 3 horses = 12 bucks
2 dollar trifecta box on 4 horses = 48 bucks
1 dollar superfecta box on 4 horses = 24 bucks

Thanks spidey

For a few of you others: I'm not about to succumb to a gambling addiction and fall tens of thousands of dollars into debt. I know it's not the smartest way to spend your money, but can't a grown man get drunk, wager some of his hard-earned money, and hoot-n-holler cheering on some horses? If I lose 50 or 100 bucks, BFD.

i was in a bookies (betting shop), bored outta my mind, the other day, and i wondered why they dont use midgets as jockeys?

I bet you will!

Pretty much. There is sophisticated software that exists which tracks hundreds of variables and knows how to place bets accordingly without getting caught. Wired had an article on it a while ago. Other then that, if you want to bet on "sports" at least stick to one where you can know the players.

Homer: Hey Marge, look at the name of this dog I bet on! We can't lose!
Marge: "She's the fastest..." Homer, I don't think...
PA: And they're off! And immediately, "She's the Fastest" jumps out to an insormountable lead!
Homer: You're lucky you got looks, Marge.

Ahh, simpsons. I cracked up reading that.

I don't know how many races you intend to play, but at 100 bucks you could do:

2 dollar exacta box on two horses = 4
2 dollars across the board on one horse = 6

That's 10 bucks a race and you could play every race. Just remember the favorite doesn't pay too much money so look for horses in the 4-8 to 1 odds. Looks like we'll probably have 13 horses in the preakness so there is some money to be made on that one if you could save some for that race and do two exactas, one trifecta and two across the board on decent odds horses.

8 bucks for exactas (depending on odds exactas can pay 70-300+ dollars)
12 bucks for tri (you're really gonna have to include big brown in this, but if you wanna roll the dice, leave him out...big bucks if you get it)
12 bucks for your two ATB bets (no money if you put it on big brown, look elsewhere)

oh, and HAVE YOUR BETS READY before you get to the window. Walk up, place your bets, pay, collect tickets. Shouldn't take more then 30 seconds.

Betting the favorite increases your odds. If they take a dump on parade...I always bet those 🙂

And with what big brown will be at you might not even get your money back for the bet. But yeah, taking a dump in the paddock is viewed as a good sign.

Big Brown is pretty much a shoe-in so what you should do is bet one of the exotics, exacta/trifecta/superfecta, put Big Brown on top with some other horses boxed. So, let's say Big Brown is number 5 and you wanted to bet a trifecta, you could pick 3 other horses and it would be like this:

5-1-2
5-1-3
5-2-1
5-2-3
5-3-1
5-3-2

So you would say $1 trifecta box, 5 on top with 1,2,3 .. and it would cost you $6. Throw some longshots in there and you could make some good money, especially if you bet more than $1.

good luck
