TAS Member's thread for June: Seti@home 10-years anniversary crunch

OK, the poll is done - and seti it is.
I have collected the stats and will post them tomorrow.

Lets get crunching! 😀

Edit: June 14, 2009

Here, at TAS, are the first week's crunching stats.
It looks quite good: we have produced more than 1 million credits (the TeAm has produced 2.76 million credits in the same time) and we may produce almost 5 million before the month is out.

Here are the team stats:

Team stats:
_ Rank ____ Credits ____ Rank _____ Credits _____ Production ___ Change ____ Name
_ Jun 01 ____ Jun 01 ___ Jun 07 _____ Jun 07 ______ in June _____ in rank
_15 ____ 214 249 956 ___ 15 ____ 216 357 172 ____ 2 107 216 ______ 0 ______ OcUK -Overclockers UK
_16 ____ 212 553 889 ___ 16 ____ 215 507 428 ____ 2 953 539 ______ 0 ______ TeAm AnandTech
_17 ____ 211 585 287 ___ 17 ____ 212 587 694 ____ 1 002 407 ______ 0 ______ Team MacNN

We will probably pass OcUK with 10 - 14 days ...

Is there an optimized app for regular SETI work units (not Astropulse)? The only one I can find was last updated in 2007. I can't run Astropulse on my office machines due to the way the Astropulse application uses memory, but I would still like to use an optimized app...

I downloaded both optimized apps from here, but I used this app_info.xml that i edited to match the app versions that I used. I tried using the app_info provided from the first link, but I would get errors. With the app_info from the second link every workunit has been running with the optimized app and it hasn't given me any errors.

IIRC the standard app is optimized - no need to use anything else for the "enhanced" WUs.

Really? Then why is my production so awful? My 21 computers are all running SETI and I barely managed to break 4K points today (2794 and 2173 the previous two days). I normally get around 10-12K per day on "average" projects.

Edit: I did just start running SETI a few days ago so I'm not up to "full speed" but I got the same results when I had my machines running SETI for several weeks earlier this year.

Well, one possibility is that you have a lot of WUs pending ... I have just now more than 67 000 credits pending, at some times I have had more than 95K pending - and that is when running 16 computers part time (because I was crunching other TAS-projects too).

But I'll check into this again!

I considered that, but I have less than 6K pending right now. Adding those to my total points for the past four days still only gives me an average of 5010 points per day. 🙁

yep...with the enhanced workunits, per-cpu-core averages of 38 to 50 points for 3 to 4 hours of work are less than satisfying.

So do the SETI Enhanced work units just not score well? If so, that would explain my problem since I'm not running Astropulse.

Hmmm, I am just running the optimized versions of the clients and am getting around 11 - 12 K/day. When running all 20 comps 100% seti then I can get an RAC of 18 - 20K. When I add some computers then the RAC adjusts during a period of 8 - 10 days ... before that the comparison "before" and "after" is not really relevant.

OTOH: when running other projects (ABC@Home, yoyo, MilkyWay and others) then the RAC could easily be arteound 35 - 40K. Thus projects are not equal and seti is one of the less yielding projects.
Seti gives credits according to FLOPS. The other projects have often some other way to calculate credits.
Projects which want to attract a large number of crunchers choose to give a higher number of credits. Some projects have been known to adjust the credits bu using some kind of factor ...

Therefore the comparison between projects reflects the developers' need for crunchers, not the work really done.

my C2Q@3333MhZ crunches WUs in 680 sec while a similar core i7 takes over 2000 sec with the stock app!!

As I stressed before, use these optimized apps (with the highest level of SSE available on your hardware) for the multibeam WUs! It makes a very big difference!

I'm probably just going blind in my old age, but I looked through that list three times and only see optimized applications for Astropulse...

Look here http://lunatics.kwsn.net/index...odule=Downloads;catd=9

you have 3 lists:
1. unified installer (i prefer doing it myself)
2. astropulse
3. multibeam (at the very bottom)

Peter (or anyone)

Am I right to assume there will be a seti race later this month? I am not a member of TAS and would fall into the "all the others" category....................😛

If so, when would be the optimal time for me to shift my Boinc clients to Seti so as to get results sent in that would count for the race? For example if the race starts the 20th would I start my clients on the 19th?

The work units are pretty small, you should be able to return 1 result per core every 3 hours and with optimized applications about every hour.
However since every work unit has to be crunched by 2 different computers (to compare the results) it'll take some time till you get credit, the more you crunch the more WUs will be credited quickly. I recommend personally to start 3 days ahead to avoid having too much pending credits.

Well, AFAIK there will be a race. I just got to get it started ... I'll post more tomorrow! 🙂

You could get your client started one or two days in advance - but it is also OK to start on the same day. If you start a few days ahead, you'll collect "pending credits" (which need verifications) and these may be counted to your stats just when you start. I assume that all those who are running the project have a lot of pending, so it is only fair if those who join the project have the same situation!
