How many people will die from skin cancer?
  • The American Cancer Society estimates there will be about 10,600 deaths from skin cancer in 2005 ? 7,800 from melanoma and 2,800 from other skin cancers.
Changes in the skin related to sun exposure:
  • Pre-cancerous (actinic keratosis) and cancerous (basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma) skin lesions ? caused by loss of the skin?s immune function
    Benign tumors
    Fine and coarse wrinkles;
    Freckles;
    Discolored areas of the skin, called mottled pigmentation;
    Sallowness ? a yellow discoloration of the skin;
    Telangiectasias ? the dilation of small blood vessels under the skin;
    Elastosis ? the destruction of the elastic tissue causing lines and wrinkles.
What are the harmful effects?
  • Too much sun speeds up ageing of the skin, making it leathery, mottled and wrinkled.
The American Cancer Society estimates that about 59,600 new melanomas will be diagnosed in the United States during 2005

I believe that spending time in the sun makes us feel better, but burns and significant tanning is probably dangerous...

The latest studies show that sun exposure gives us much needed vitamin E, which may outweigh the skin cancer risk (see the link above).

sunscreen and then make sure your not out there too long... studies have shown that it makes people happy... just becareful of mr. sun

Just stock up on the No-Ad Babies Sun Block SPF 45 (Zinc Oxide) at WalMart for $6 for 16oz.

The only good sunblocks have Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide. The rest are crap.

Uh, sun exposure is needed. All the people who hide inside and paste on the sunscreen at any chance of going outside are a little cracked.

If you haven't been outside for a year and you're going to the beach all day, then yeah, wear some sunscreen. But getting some sun exposure and developing a mild to moderate tan is not going to kill you. Geez.

Extreme burns, (and burns of any kind) are to be avoided, but if you're in a panic because you got a bit of a tan and think you're going to die from skin cancer, you should probably walk around with an air filtering mask on to avoid carcinogens in the air, because there is a higher risk there :p

If you were as white as I am, you'd act 'cracked' too. Takes me 20 mins to burn, and I mean lobster burned.

I got way too much sun exposure when I was young. Now I am a good girl and wear sunscreen always. My mom getting skin cancer keeps me mindful :(

Hey, that's understandable. I have a friend who is Norweigan in heritage and he is pretty pasty too :)

I should have put a disclaimer on there for people that burn easily. But can you develop any kind of tan from brief sun exposure on a regular basis? That'd probably help you in the long run, as it could prevent such easily-had sunburns from happening. But if you're not able to tan at all, then you have my condolences. :(

Skin cancer:

Another disease affected more by genetics than anything else, yet the advice to stay out of the sun has become universal.

Medical advice is NOT one size fits all folks. Some people have a high risk for skin cancer, and others have little to no risk... even if they spend their lives in the sun.

As in all things, evaluate your risk, and moderate your exposure accordingly.
