What kind of zoom is 300mm? As in 10x, 20x?

real lenses arent measures in a ##x
all a 10x soom is telling you is trhat the difference between wide open and fill zoom is 10
so a camera with a 20-200mm lens woudl basically be 10x
and 70-300 lens is a 4.28x zoom

Anubis, what's your opinion on the Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO Macro Super II?
its great for what it costs as i said earlier, the only one of them that is better is the Nikon 70-300 ED, however it doesnt have the nifty macro feature that the sigma has if you care about that
i highly recomend it as a buget long zoom lens, many people on dp review use it as well as the nikon 70-300G, and it takes great pics, i had teh nikon and it was great

You can get it for something like $129 from http://www.sigmaforless.com which is cheap even for what I paid a few months ago for it. Its a good lens for the $$ and the pictures look good from it even at 300mm. Make sure you have a tripod or a monopod. She is hard to hold at 300 by hand.
Get yourself a 50mm 1.8 while your at it. Its probably my favorite lens and its cheap as dirt.

If you've got the money, get the sigma over the tamron - it's better at controlling CA / Purple fringing.
Which ever one you get, they're both sharpest after you stop down a little. I have the tamron, and after a little informal testing, it seems that the pictures are sharpest when the lens is closed down to at least F/8.0.
Oh, and if you're hand holding the lens, remember to keep the shutter speed at or over 1/focal length. Otherwise the pictures are likely to come out blurry as hell
Another thing you may want to look at, if you don't need to go quite that long (though, if you're going to use it from the nosebleed seats at a ballgame, you'll need all the reach you can get), you might want to look at something like the Sigma 18-200, as well.

I don't know if I trust them... Their reseller ratings seem fishy.
