i'm driving down a 2 lane merge ramp, the sign clearly shows the left lane as ending, we can see where the two lanes merge, this car to the left of me is driving next to me and is showing NO signs of slowing down or speeding up. as i'm in the lane that doesn't end, i decide there really is nothing i should be doing, besides the worst thing i could do is slow down or speed up and guess wrong.

so i'm driving and this moron is next to me driving either completely oblivious OR with a complete sense of entitlement, (in other words she either isn't aware her lane is ending OR she thinks it's my responsibility to make room for her).

finally the road is really tightening and she is being squeezed, she still has the option to speed up or slow down, she does neither.

now it's really tight and she HAS to do something, so she slams on the brakes and HONKS at me.

WTF. is she really that stupid?

happened to me AGAIN TODAY. i was driving on a 4 lane freeway. i was in the 2nd lane, the lane to the right of me was an exit only lane. many signs clearly explain it is an exit only lane. the guy immediately to the right of me at the last fvcking second realizes he doesn't want to make the exit and cuts INTO me, not in front of me, but INTO me. fvcking moron. i have to slam on the brakes, in this case he didn't see me at all.

the fact is, it would have been stupid on my part to speed up or slow down because at any moment she could have decided to do one or the other, if i had guessed wrong, it would have been bad for both of us.

the best course of action for me is to maintain my speed and have her either speed up and go around me or slow down and pull in beside me.

Take 4 lanes squeeze them to one and watch the hillarity. I think the city does it on purpose sometimes.

someone who feels everything is owed to them.

the impression i got as she was honking at me was, she felt i was in the wrong for NOT accomodating her when it was CLEARLY her lane that was ending and even tho there had been signs to notify her of that fact.

i'm not sure if you are being sarcastic or not, but defensive driving in this case is to maintain status quo. just as many bad things could have happened by me either speeding up or slowing down as doing nothing.

It doesn't matter if she wasn't paying attention, it's her responsibility as a driver. If she doesn't want to pay attention then she shouldn't be on the road.

What an idiot she is. I notice a similar phenomenon in malls. People will walk straight at you, and if you don't move out of the way they'd run right into you. I just don't get it. Same with people that walk 4 across and expect you to stand with your back against the wall so they can pass you. I really just hate all people.

I agree. My point was that she didn't realize she was being a jerk. Most people get so wrapped up in their own thing that they don't bother making any attempt to be courteous to other people on the road, in the grocery store, whatever.

Don't move, I don't. Of course you get run into occasionally, but seeing the look of shock on someone's face when they realize you aren't moving is priceless.

I guess that's a plus for being a fairly big guy. I don't move out of the way any more, I let the mall crowd part for me.

Fsck them. I got tired of acting like walking through a mall (or similar place) was like walking through an obstacle course.

If they run into me, they bounce off. Fsck 'em.

Edit: Of course I move out of the way for the elderly and disabled. I also don't mow down little kids who aren't paying attention. I'm not a complete asshole (some parts are missing).

i faced that in Seoul, i'm 5'11" 220 lbs, not small by US standards, pretty big by korean standards and yet, they still don't get out of the way. you would think these small middle school kids would want to get out of the way and not run into me.

I guess it's not just that I'm 6' 210, but that I'm built and it shows. People see that and move now. It didn't used to be that way a few years ago before I started lifting seriously and trimmed my 30s flab. I weighed about the same, but it was mostly around my waist.

I think it's different when people are merging from on-ramps. It's just polite to move over if you can. They have a very limited space to merge... unlike the idiot who has miles of warning before a lane ends and waits 'till the last second.

Watch truckers. They'll move over to the left to let on-ramp people on, but will block lanes to stop lane ending line jumpers from going all the way to the front.
