Same with people that walk 4 across and expect you to stand with your back against the wall so they can pass you. I really just hate all people.
Don't move, I don't. Of course you get run into occasionally, but seeing the look of shock on someone's face when they realize you aren't moving is priceless.

I don't move. If they hit me, I stop and look at them. They usually say sorry and step around me. I'm a solid guy, so I don't get pushed around.

this happened to me today on my way to work... these two middle-aged women who were smoking were walking towards me and NEITHER of them moved... so i proceeded to bump one and just glared at her. needtheless to say, she didnt do a thing. dont you love american courtesy?

I hate idiots like that, if I'm on the highway and someones merging onto the highway, I don't slow down or speed up for anyone. It's their responsibility to safely merge, not mine.

I think it's different when people are merging from on-ramps. It's just polite to move over if you can. They have a very limited space to merge... unlike the idiot who has miles of warning before a lane ends and waits 'till the last second.
 ... I hate righteous idiots who don't have courtesy at on-ramps... exactly how many of them needed to be in the right lane right there ? It's not like it's the first time they've seen merging cars coming up to an on-ramp either.

I always move over to the left if possible, but if I have to stay in the right lane I never adjust my speed. I've gotten into situations where I tried to be nice by slowing down to let someone in, then they slowed down, etc, and it just creates a dangerous situation. I'll always move over though. The roads would be so much nicer if people cared about someone other than themselves once in a while.

Yep, actually you're supposed to move over.

The exact opposite happened to me yesterday. I was merging onto a freeway and had matched speed with the car that will be directly in front of me. I could neither speed up nor slow down. Then some doomas speeding in the same lane got pissed off that I merged in front of him and he had to slow down a few seconds earlier than he would have had to if I had merged behind him. He honked and shook his head while I smiled and waved.

What I have found is that most people don't know what to do in that situation. Even if they had been taught at some time, they have forgotten by now, or just don't think of it. Most people seem to think that they have to force their way into traffic, and the proper way to do that is to 'get their nose in' so the cars around you will have to give you room. Kind of like the automotive version of elbowing your way though a crowd.

Of course you were right; the only safe way to assist her to merge is to maintain speed and a safe follow distance from the car in front of you. Her job is then to merge with traffic at a safe place and speed. Any changes you make would only disrupt her ability to find that balance.

You think that is a funny situation, just go and watch a 4 way stop sign for awhile, eventually 4 cars will stop at about the same time, and NONE of them will know who is suppose to go first.

Or even better yet a 4 way blinking red light. Everyone seems to know they are supposed to stop, but then seems confused about what to do next. Some just sit there for awhile, often waiting to travel in the shadow of another vehicle, some stop and then immediately go, still others stop and then creep forward playing a little game of ?who gets to the center first.? Then there are those special people who don?t have time for all this and try to zoom around everyone else (into on coming traffic) or make right hand turns from the left hand lane.

You don't even need 4 cars arriving at the same time to confuse people in my experience, just two or three arriving at different times will do the job. I see people just sitting there waiting all the time. It's real simple, you pull up to the sign and look around at who's already there. When those cars have gone, then you go. I guess it's because we don't have many 4-way stop signs around here. They love them in Indiana.

I hate it when people merge onto the highway and EXPECT you to slow down for them. I HAVE THE RIGHT OF WAY DAMMIT!

happened to me AGAIN TODAY. i was driving on a 4 lane freeway. i was in the 2nd lane, the lane to the right of me was an exit only lane. many signs clearly explain it is an exit only lane. the guy immediately to the right of me at the last fvcking second realizes he doesn't want to make the exit and cuts INTO me, not in front of me, but INTO me. fvcking moron. i have to slam on the brakes, in this case he didn't see me at all.

lot of bad stupid drivers.

Soon you will realize that defensive driving means NOT driving side by side with another car. I agree with you: don't suddenly speed up or slow down. But do something, ANYTHING, subtle to avoid that situation.

The way I read your posts, it sounds like you knew what you were doing was legal, but you did it purposely to prove something to others. Yes, they are stupid. But puting your car or life on the line to prove your correctness is even more stupid. Even if what you were doing was legal.

I guess that was the point I was trying to make as well.

Don't drive next to people or especially in their blind spot.

i don't drive in peoples blind spots but have you guys seen traffic in NJ in the mornings? driving alongside someone where i can see their face is not unusual and is difficult to avoid. it's safer there (as i'm not in their blind spot) than slightly behind (where i would be in their blind spot) or slightly ahead (where they would be in my blind spot).

actually in the second incident, i had to slam on my brakes to prevent having him run into me. and no i wasn't driving alongside him to prove a point.

The other day I was getting on the freeway with about 20 other cars spaced about 2-3 car lengths apart and merging into the right lane on a 5 lane freeway that was moderately crowded. I sped up to the speed limit that everyone else was going and moved into the far right lane when this fvckwad in an SUV comes flying up behind me at about 90mph and slams on his brakes getting all pissed off at me in the process. Bear in mind there are cars in front of me doing the same speed as me so if he didn't slam on his brakes for me it would have been for one of the cars in front of me. As he moved over and exited I gave him the one finger salute as he blew by me on the right.

What a fvckwit. Hopefully he will become a traffic fatality statistic soon.

Edit-You're from NJ. What do you expect?
