If you're in the new york area you could have 100 Mbs service from Cablevision by May 11 as they roll out Docsis 3.0.

In North America, that gives the New York-based MSO some cable industry bragging rights, just outpacing a 100-Mbit/s Docsis 3.0 tier that Canada's Shaw Communications Inc. launched earlier this year. They used to have upload caps back in the day, but not anymore. And it was a speed cap, not download cap.

I have been very happy with Cablevision and look forward to this.

Right now I have uncapped service from them which comes out to around 36-40mbit download speeds. 🙂 Uploads are capped at 5mbit.
 
Burst means nothing. Sustained throughput means something. If cable can offer that kind of speed on a sustained basis, and without ripping off captive consumers with caps and throttling etc, then I'll consider it.

This. My hard drive can burst to 300 mb/sec for exactly as much time as it takes to transfer the 32mb that is in cashe. That doesn't mean my hard drive is rated to 300 mb/sec.

This is a stupid marketing ploy unless that speed is (or substantially similar) to FIOS.

Hell, I can go to CA to one of the major internet switching offices and transfer several hundred PB to tape, toss it in a station wagon, and drive to my house. Even though it may take several thousand tapes and tape drives a day to write that data, 3 days to drive cross country, and a day to offload the data, my mb/sec is several orders of magnitude higher than 101 mb/sec. But my latency sucks.

If all that mattered was bandwidth, then we would all have station wagons and tape drives. Remember, never underestimate the bandwidth of a station wagon full of tapes driving down the street.

I read about this around noon on Broadbandreports.com. Sound sweet. Not sure if I need that kind of speed or not...er...sure I do...but $99.00 is more that I want to spend (but might find a way, lol) 😛

Shit, I'm too cheap to pony up an extra $10 per month to go from 10Mbps to 20Mbps right now, lol! 😛
 
Pretty impressive IMO. Probably won't be able to sustain anywhere near 100Mbps (at least not during peak hours), but it's still nice to have that kind of capacity, especially at only $100/mo. This is how the high speed net in other countries works as well. For example a 100Mbps fiber connection in Japan just means up to 100Mbps, they don't guarantee those speeds. Realistically you could probably expect closer to 50Mbps on the island (and of course much less if you're connecting to networks outside of Japan).

Also caps aren't looking likely. Cablevision has actually publicly stated they are against metered billing and caps. I'm jealous of the New York folks, OOL and FiOS both seem like pretty awesome services. Nice to see them going head-to-head, means faster internet and cheaper prices for the consumer. 🙂

I had a chance to go from FIOS (3-package) to Cablevision (3-package) and save $30/mo. while getting 10Mbps faster internet (30/5). I called FIOS and all they could do was give me $10 off making the deficit $20/mo. for a year. I stayed with FIOS. Cablevision's tv service (and I hate this phrase) leaves a lot to be desired and in the end $20 is not good enough to change back to them. If this 100Mbps service were included instead of the 30/5, then we could re-negotiate. 😉 The Cablevision capping back in the day still leaves a bad taste in my mouth... they would deny it on the phone when I spoke to them. Win for competition since that's probably what caused them to stop.

VZ has been testing the same speeds for some time. I wonder if they are ready to fire back yet?

Based on some of the new and proposed pricing strategies I've seen from cable companies, especially when the Time Warner thing was blowing up, it occurred to me that the plan is to condition customers to accept $100/month cable internet bills -- to replace the revenue they're going to lose as people ditch $50 cable TV packages.

I can't get too excited about these gaudy speed numbers from DOCSIS 3.0, when they're apparently going to cost a household $90-$100/month (*double* the price? WTF?) and eventually come with caps, caps that will prove to be way too low when most of us start slamming that connection for all of our TV and HD video.

170Mbps or 340Mbps download speed per node. Absolutely fucking useless assuming it's a 4 channel bonding. It's asinine to offer plans that allocate more than half of the total node bandwidth to a single customer. Overselling to the max. This is just a desperate attempt to compete with FIOS which will ultimately fail because FIOS can offer those speeds without overselling.
