The world's tallest building in one of the world's most earthquake-prone countries? Could be really bad if a big one hits.
Actually I was also watching a show about buildings the other day on TLC or discovery, and it was talking about how tall skyscrapers are actually less prone to damage from earthquakes, as opposed to normal buildings. Something to do with the fact that they can move and sway or something. I'm not saying an earthquake wouldn't take this thing down, but its complicated.

Yawn. There have been 1000 proposed projects that would dwarf anything currently in existence. Anyone can draw up a building of any height and claim that they're going for the world record, but when it comes time to put up or shut up, the money evaporates. Current engineering abilities would easily allow for a building to top 2000', but it becomes very impractical. Once beyond 800 or so feet it becomes counter-productive to go taller. The logistics of getting people into and out of the building efficiently gets hampered with additional height. Add in the extra elevators needed to service additional stories and you lose precious floor space and the rent that space generates. You can make more money with a shorter structure that makes better use of the available space.
When it comes down to it, all the super skyscrapers are just monuments to the ego of the builder and Freudian penis envy taken to the ultimate level. It's a matter of "mine is bigger than yours" and during the right economic times people have the money to waste on making a building taller without being able to recoup that investment in rents. Right about now things don't look good for such wasteful projects. The US economy is too uncertain. The Pacific rim bubble burst and hundreds of proposed projects got scrapped. The mid-east? I don't think so, they might have the cash, but they've also got more space than they know what to do with. Land is cheap and plentiful and a 1500'+ ft tower would be stupid beyond belief. A series of smaller towers would be far better financially and also offer less of a target in such an unstable region. Call me when they break ground on that monster in Dubai, but I won't be holding my breath. The 6000' ft tower that's proposed in my head has just as good a chance of seeing the light of day.

Skyscrapers are not rare in UAE.
They have the World's tallest hotel
and Towers in the top ten

yup. If you ever have been in a skyscraper during a day with some slight wind, you will notice that it sways in the wind so it doesnt fully resist all that air pressure. I'm going to assume that it would also help during an earthquake, as it would be more fluid, as opposed to the rigid structure of a normal building
I think the buildings are much more rigid than everyone thinks.. I read somewhere in an engineering publication that said from top to bottom, the Sears Tower only flexes 6 inches in 100mph wind. Chicago is the windy city.

The Shanghai World Financial Center (kinda ironic for a communist country)
looks much more impressive.
The roof is way taller than any other skyscaper, going all the way to the top.
Plus the hole in the middle of it is very ineresting

Over 13,000 feet tall..
It was suposed to be a mini city inside of Tokyo modeled after Mt. Fuji
Mostly just a pipe dream, however, like the floating city Freedom Ship and the Gibraltar Bridge

wow, cool stuff....1km/minute...that's 60km/hr...that's like what...35 miles/hour? Residential speeds going UP a building.
Can't wait to visit Taiwan after it's built...
