Tablet and Smartphone

Hi,

i had this idee some days ago and wanted to ask if it is possible.

The only difference between a modern smartphone and a tablet pc is the screen size, so to get a tablet a smartphone owner just needs a second screen with a bigger size. One possibility is a concept like the ASUS Padfone.

Would it now be possible to use a wireless connection instead of the direct docking connection of the Padfone ?

If it is possible a simple screen with a battery and a wireless module woud be enough to upgrade a smartphone to a tablet pc. A resulting device could be exceptionally thinn and light. Think about a much thinner and lighter ipad2, also different screen sizes like 7, 10, and 12'' could be provided without much problem.

What do you think is such a device practical, how much would it cost, will we see such a device in the near future ?

English is not my first language so i hope you don't mind errors so much :)

Motorola showed why such ideas are impractical with the Atrix. The Atrix was a great idea, but Motorola thought it was such a great idea that they charged as much for the laptop dock as an ION netbook costs. I pretty much expect the Padfone to also be overpriced (anything more then $99 for the tablet shell is overpriced).

The issue is that all this (fast phones, tablets, etc.) are all so new that manufacturers are doing their best to make sure they get as much as possible. They learned their lesson with the computer industry- once it became a race for the bottom price-wise everyone but Apple lost.

Maybe in five years such things will be possible and reasonably priced.

battery life becomes an issue if you are doing everything over wireless. streaming display content will eat through a non-docked phone's battery very quickly.

but then if you do that, the tablet has to have hardware on board for bluetooth and video processing, which means it also needs a processor...which means its a tablet again. or a gimped playbook.
